1 The Life of Christ Lesson 5 – From Judea to Galilee
Retiring to Galilee – Matthew 4:12, 17; Mark 1:14-15; Luke 3:19-20; Luke 4:14-15; John 4:1- 54 Preaching in Capernaum – Matthew 4:13-16, 18-25; 8:14- 17; Mark 1:16-39; Luke 4:31-44; 5:1-11

2 Jesus’ response to the woman’s question about where to worship
John 4:20-24 The woman asked about “worship” in general. Jesus answers about worship of “the Father.” It’s not about “where” Jesus says but “how.” Hebrews 9:1; Acts 17:24-25 What does this say about all OT worship? James 2:10 What is God looking for? Verse 23 First – Worshippers Second – those who worship in spirit and truth

3 Jesus’ response to the woman’s question about where to worship
John 4:20-24 Regarding true worship: What had the Rulers of the Jews (those who argued for Jerusalem) stripped away from worship by focusing on the outward form and ceremony of worship? Spirit – Matthew 23:27-28 Malachi 1:12-14 What had the Samaritans stripped away from worship by combining it with idolatrous practices? Truth – 2 Kings 17:40

4 The woman’s final response to Jesus
John 4:25 Putting it all together … Jesus “declares” He has living water. Jesus “declares” facts about her life. Jesus “declares” what true worship is that the Father seeks – unlike any worship she has known. 1 Corinthians 1:22-24 – “For Jews request a sign, and Greeks seek after wisdom; but we preach Christ crucified …”

5 The woman’s final response to Jesus
John 4:25 She then combines all that with her knowledge that the “Messiah is coming” and that when He comes, He will “declare all things to us” (literally “announce or make known”). Deuteronomy 18:18-19 Luke 2:30-32 – Simeon She uses the Jewish expression for the Messiah and not one the Samaritans normally used. John 3:2 – compare to Nicodemus John 4:42 – Samaritans (Acts 8:6-8, 12) She even uses traditional Jewish language to describe the “Coming One,” since Messiah (“Christ” is the Greek translation) is the Hebrew nomenclature for the anointed king of the Davidic house. Samaritans saw their “Messiah” as a Taheb, a “Returning One” (from the Hebrew verb shub, “to turn or return”; he was the “Prophet like Moses” of Deut. 18:15-19), seen by them as primarily a teacher of the Law. “He will tell us all things,” is a veiled reference to Deuteronomy 18:18.

6 Jesus confirms His identity …
John 4:26 Jesus confirms His identity … Jesus confirms “who it is” (verse 10) she is speaking with … “I who speak to you am (He).” Jesus has led this woman to the conclusion He was seeking: That she has a need for “living water” That Jesus is the Messiah. Jesus’ use of “I am” - John 8:24,28,58; 13:19 Who else did Jesus reveal Himself so plainly to? John 9:35-38, Blind Man healed. Matthew 26:63-65, 68; 27:41-43

7 Jesus’ discussion with His disciples
John 4:27-38 Jesus’ disciples return with … Food and (Matthew 4:1-4) Amazement – “to wonder; by implication to admire … have in admiration, marvel, wonder.” (Strong) What do they not return with which the Samaritan woman does? (verses 30, 40) What do Jesus’ disciples and the Samaritan woman have in common? Both had a fleshly (not spiritual) mindset.

8 Jesus’ discussion with His disciples
John 4:27-38 What are Jesus’ disciples thinking when they return? What does the Samaritan woman do when Jesus’ disciples return? Why? What does she leave behind? She came in need of physical water and ended up leaving her water pot behind … Jesus had introduced her to a more urgent need. Revelation 22:1, 17

9 Jesus’ discussion with His disciples
John 4:27-38 After leaving the water pot, she “went into the city and said to the men, ‘Come, see a man who told me all the things that I have done; this is not the Christ (Messiah) is it?’” “This is a day of good news …” – 2 Kings 7:9; (cf. Jeremiah 20:9; 1 Corinthians 9:16-17)
