1 Status of the CO2 Cooling Project
Test CO2 System for PXD and SVD (“MARCO”) is being built at MPI with the help of Nikhef/CERN, DESY and Vienna MARCO (Multipurpose Apparatus for Research on CO2): 1kW unit - design of MARCO finalized by K. Ackermann (+ CERN) - frame (+ valves etc.) was done at CERN by MPI technician - now being equipped with pipe connections + all parts - after pressure tests transport back to CERN - electronics installation and commissioning at CERN After this: “IBBelle” (for ATLAS IBL and Belle II): 2kW unit (2 units foreseen for Tsukuba hall, what about Vienna ?) C. Kiesling, B2GM, KEK, Mar , 2012

2 Status of MARCO construction
MARCO arrived on 22/12/11 Work on piping started on January 26, 2012 Piping now finished Waiting for some missing parts (chiller, flow meter etc.) Pressure and tightness tests at MPI in early April 2012 Transport back to CERN by mid April 2012 C. Kiesling, B2GM, KEK, Mar , 2012

5 Status of MARCO construction (cont.)
Pressure and tightness tests in early April (no TÜV !) Transport back to CERN by mid April + pressure test! mid April C. Kiesling, B2GM, KEK, Mar , 2012

6 Next Steps Certification of MARCO will teach us a lot for IBBelle
Pressure and tightness tests at MPI (no TÜV yet): - pressure test with 150 bar pressure - tightness test with 100 bar over 24 hours with negligible pressure drop - these tests are sufficient for CERN safety department We plan for a complete TÜV test and certificate when MARCO is back at MPI (after the commissioning at CERN) Reason: TÜV wants to certify an apparatus without any changes afterwards. Otherwise a new certification is necessary (this is similar to CE certification) Certification of MARCO will teach us a lot for IBBelle C. Kiesling, B2GM, KEK, Mar , 2012

7 Possible Location for the CO2 Cooling Plant
CO2 bottles CO2 plants Can we have a balcony there ? C. Kiesling, B2GM Meeting, PXD Session, Nagoya, Jul. 6-9, 2011 C. Kiesling, B2GM, KEK, Mar , 2012 7

8 Possible Location for the CO2 Cooling Plant (cont.)
Floor plan for MARCO (like IBBelle) left in Tsukuba hall C. Kiesling, B2GM Meeting, PXD Session, Nagoya, Jul. 6-9, 2011

9 Possible Location for the CO2 Cooling Plant (cont.)
foam insolation from IBBelle to the manifolds on top or on the sides of Belle II Vacuum insulation (double tubes) from manifold to the dry volume of the SVD/PXD C. Kiesling, B2GM Meeting, PXD Session, Nagoya, Jul. 6-9, 2011

10 Piping from the CO2 Cooling Plant to PXD/SVD
C. Kiesling, B2GM, KEK, Mar , 2012

11 Piping from the CO2 Cooling Plant to PXD/SVD
Start cold volume C. Kiesling, B2GM, KEK, Mar , 2012

12 First Work on Vacuum Tubes
Done by student (Raoul Letschka) Test tube to the cooling block Cu tube 10 mm diameter Steel tubes, 2 mm and 3 mm diameter, vac ~10-3 mbar tested a 3 m assembly with liquid nitrogen (- 180 °C) C. Kiesling, B2GM, KEK, Mar , 2012

13 First Work on Vacuum Tubes (cont.)
keep distance to Cu wall by plastic hose C. Kiesling, B2GM, KEK, Mar , 2012

14 First Work on Vacuum Tubes (cont.)
Conclusion: Vacuum isolation works well at lN2, Expected to even be better at -30° CO2 C. Kiesling, B2GM, KEK, Mar , 2012
