1 Warm-up (Sept 15 and 18) Homework Day 4 in inbox, please!
Also get out: Goggles, highlighter, and Syllabus/Safety Contract

2 Safety Training! Safety quiz next class!
You need to know your safety contract and the content of our safety training Powerpoint for lab safety on Moodle

3 Demo: Macro and Micro-scopic matter!
Macroscale = Microscale = Dots and faces demo – zoom out!

4 In your notes: Properties of Matter
What is matter? Occupies space and has mass Exists in three states solid: rigid, fixed volume and shape liquid: volume but conforms to its container gas: no fixed volume OR shape Yes, plasma (ionized gas)…not super important to us right now!

5 Properties of Matter Pure substance Mixture: multiple pure substances
Constant composition Single element (aluminum, Al) or compound (water, H2O) Mixture: multiple pure substances Homogeneous = can’t tell one part from another (Solution if it is dissolved) Heterogeneous = visibly distinguishable parts

6 Examples! Put into each of the correct categories in your notes…
bubble tea blood chlorine diamond ethanol hydrogen peroxide iodine krypton milk Paraffin wax tin chloride salt copper brass steel air gasoline uranium dry ice strawberry lemonade sugar oxygen iron

7 Good to know! Dry Ice = compound Steel = mixture Brass = mixture
Solid CO2 Liquid Nitrogen is used to cool the carbon dioxide down at high pressures Sublimation – the cool part of Dry Ice! -79.6OC (solid)  gas (no liquid in between!) A little video Steel = mixture Alloy (solid solution) of Iron and Carbon Brass = mixture Alloy of Copper and Zinc

8 Question to ponder in groups: How can we identify a piece of matter?
Conductivity, luster, heat capacity, radioactivity,

9 Exit Ticket: Sig Figs Practice Quiz
Log on to your AOSR Follow link from me to the practice quiz! Calculator needed! Take your time and do your best! Show me what you know!

10 Homework Day 5 Safety quiz next class (T/W)
