Metaphor: "The Aged must have been stirring with the lark, for, glancing into the perspective of his bedroom, I observed that his bed was empty."(Dickens, 482) Dickens used the metaphor "Stirring with the lark" to describe that what the Aged was doing was mischievous and wasn’t in his bedroom like he should be. Imagery: "The Aged was likewise occupied in preparing a similar sacrifice for the altar of Hymen."(Dickens, 482) Dickens uses a reference to the Greek god Hymen to symbolize how long and meticulous the Aged was being while getting ready. Theme, satire and figurative language Don’t take anyone for granted because they may not be there tomorrow. This is referring to the fact that Herbert is leaving and Magwitch is being taken away from Pip. So he has to let go of the fact that they wont be there anymore.

Satire: “But nothing could unsay the fact that he had returned, and was there in the presence of the judge and jury. It was impossible to try him for that, and to do otherwise than to find him guilty.” (Dickens, 486) Dickens is satirizing the justice system by saying that it was prejudice.
