Did we capture the conversation??
September Minutes: Did we capture the conversation?? Grow Grand Island … A Grander Vision for the Heartland So we as a group have spent the first 2 meetings getting to know each other a little and talking about the importance of becoming an intercultural or culturally proficient community. So, know we are ready to begin the strategic community planning process and if you have been through any type of process like this, it often times is harder or cloudier at the beginning, but exercise is just as important as the outcome. To begin …. We did the survey as a result of the last meetings conversation. Thank you for taking the time to complete the survey. We had ??/?? people participate & we’ll get to those results in a few minutes. So, very we are going to start today by re-stating our goal & showing the definition of Engagement & Understanding …. GOAL: When the community as a whole engaged in the visioning processes last year, this was the goal identified. << read slide >>.

GOAL: Build an Inclusive Community
Grow Grand Island … A Grander Vision for the Heartland What does the name of our committee mean? At the most basic level, let’s start by talking about the name of our committee. Cultural engagement and understanding. We have to do both of these in order for us to achieve our goals. << read slide >> << Eddy’s words. Choose what you’d like here. >> “One thing that resonates with me is the past emphasis on the US being a melting pot. To many, this meant that all cultures come to America and they all become one with emphasis on the predominant culture. We have learned that the goal is not necessarily a melting pot, but a salad where each individual person can maintain their form, but where it all works together. (Not worded great, but you get the point )” Now Nicki will talk about the Strategic Planning process.

What is an inclusive community?
Does everything that it can to respect all its citizens, gives them full access to resources, and promotes equal treatment and opportunity. Works to eliminate all forms of discrimination. Engages all its citizens in decision-making processes that affect their lives. Values diversity. Responds quickly to racist and other discriminating incidents. Grow Grand Island … A Grander Vision for the Heartland I’ll share a little about what our process will look like. 1) Identify existing assets in our community 2) ID our target audience 3) ID obstacles that we need to overcome to achieve success 4) Education and assessment of our group and leadership groups in the community. Determine where we are on the continuum which will help us identify goals and priorities 5) We will set goals, then prioritize them 6) Prioritizing will probably involve identifying 12 mo., 24, 36 mo. priorities and maybe more Planning: Once we prioritize, we have to determine who, what, where, when, why, how & funding a. All of these initiatives are going to take a lot of resources – time, talent, treasure b. These priorities will go to the GGI Planning and Executive Committees for timelines & $ 8) Action

Why is building an inclusive community important?
Acts of exclusion and injustice based on group identity and other factors should not be allowed to occur and/or continue. All people have the right to be part of decisions that affect their lives and the groups they belong to. Diversity enriches our lives, so it is worth our while to value our community's diversity. Getting there is the hard part….
Developing intercultural competence is a core capability in the 21st century and involves cultural self-awareness, understanding the experiences of people from diverse communities, and the capability to adapt one’s mindset and behavior to bridge across differences. Hammer, 2011 Grow Grand Island … A Grander Vision for the Heartland I’ll share a little about what our process will look like. 1) Identify existing assets in our community 2) ID our target audience 3) ID obstacles that we need to overcome to achieve success 4) Education and assessment of our group and leadership groups in the community. How are we serving our community TODAY?
Homework: What programs are available in our community? What services through organizations are available in our community? What events are available in our community now? How are we serving our community TODAY? Grow Grand Island … A Grander Vision for the Heartland So far we have: 1) Identified existing assets in our community 2) Identified our target audience 3) Identified obstacles that we need to overcome to achieve success And again, as mentioned earlier … we will summarize the obstacles and next meeting we will talk about ways for us to establish a baseline or assessment of where we are today so we can measure our progress, identify gaps, etc. This exercise will help us get into setting goals and identifying priorities; get to the plan and finally begin the execution phase. Tuesday, November 24th Next Meeting ….
Grow Grand Island … A Grander Vision for the Heartland Many of you have made suggestions about things it would be good for this group to learn about. So, our next steps involve education. We want to learn from other communities, other immigrants and other groups have they have successfully reached cultural proficiency or intercultural engagement and understanding. Is there anything any of you can think of that would be a good speaker, topic of education for this group? You all have a lot of input and great ideas, lets continue this conversation at the beginning of our next meeting so we don’t miss out on this dialogue. Does that sound ok?” Thank you for your input. If you should have questions, input, suggestions, please do not hesitate to reach out to me or Nicki.

Cultural Engagement/Understanding Assets Breakdown
Nonprofits Multicultural Coalition YMCA/ YWCA Hope Harbor Nebraska Arts Council Nebraska Humanities United Way Crisis Program Lutheran Family Services Boy Scouts/ Girls Scouts Field House Stuhr Museum Latino Network Business & Government Chamber of Commerce Downtown GI City Budget County Budget Legal Aid Child Education GIPS Language Project Public Library Adult Education CCC Literacy Council Public Library DIG DEEPER ….…. Again, like mentioned earlier, this information is a graphical summary of your input from the survey. We noticed that there is a lot of different terminology and while identifying things correctly will be important, finding common terminology will be part of the learning and growing process. Is there any asset/resource that we have in our community today in regard to cultural engagement and understanding that is not on this list? (We can add new suggestions to the list) Are there any assets up here that someone does not understand or that we need to clarify? OK, that looks like a good start of the current assets/resources. Are there assets and resources on this list that some of you did not know about? If yes, then we know communication is maybe one of our obstacles.
