GOAL SETTING
3
INTRODUCTION Goal setting is a powerful technique for helping a pupil develop a solid foundation for future planning and organisation. By knowing what he or she wants to achieve in life, a pupil may know where they want to concentrate and what to improve. If pupils can set well-defined goals, they can measure and take pride in the achievement of those goals. One of the first lessons towards building up a well balanced personality is to determine your direction. Knowing where you are going is important before you can set out.

WHAT IS GOAL A goal is defined as a target. A dream in action with a purpose. Dreams with a deadline and an action plan. According to Merilyn Jemimah, “On the journey to success, the goal you set becomes the roadmap”. So , a goal is something you are trying to achieve. Goals help direct your actions and guide your decision-making because they give you something to work toward. According to Fulton Sheen, there are two general reasons why people fail in life: (a) By no target we mean no philosophy of life. (b) By too many targets we mean there isn’t any fixed philosophy of life.

Goals provide clarity 3. Goals provide challenges and standards 4. Goals reflect what the goal setters consider important 5. Goals help improve performance 6. Goals increase the motivation to achieve.

IMPORATANCE OF HAVING A STRONG IDEA
For a purposeful living, Fulton Sheen insists on having a master idea. The mind needs to be strengthened by a strong idea. The idea of weakness induced weakness in action. The idea that they had to do something about their condition produce appropriate action. Short-Term Goals - When you want to achieve something quickly, you set short-term goals. You can accomplished short-term goals in your near future – may be even today. For example, finishing your homework on time is a short-term goal. Long-Term Goal - Is something you want to achieve in the more distance future- may be a year or even more distance than that. For example, graduating from college is a long term goal. CONCLUSION Having a clear goal means bringing things into focus. One reason why so many of us do not achieve success is that our efforts are dissipated, scattered and out of focus. In the words of James Allen, “All successful people are people of purpose. They hold fast to an idea, a project, a plan and will not let it go; they cherish it, brood upon it, tend to develop it; and when assailed by difficulties, they refuse to be beguiled into surrender; indeed, the intensity of the purpose increases with the growing magnitude of the obstacles encountered.”
