Purposeful exposure to a controlled dose of harmless antigen to induce formation of antibodies => immune system produces large quantities of antibodies
Vaccine – antigen (mix) used to induce artificial active immunity
Primary purpose: immune memory
Active immunity often remains throughout life

5. Why? One of the greatest public health successes of the last century
Cost-effective weapon for prevention and control of infectious diseases
Effective vaccine – reduced incidence of formerly epidemic childhood diseases (pertussis, poliomyelitis, tetanus, measles, mumps, rubella)
Eradicated smallpox
