1 Chemistry of life

2 Starter

3

4 Objectives Reminder of chemistry basics
Differentiate between the type of bonds in a compound

5 Matter What is matter? What makes up matter?
What is the smallest unit of matter?

6 Atom What is an atom formed of?
What are some differences between the subatomic particles?

7 Subatomic particle

8 Element Periodic table Which elements are necessary for life?

9 How do elements become compounds?
By bonding Types of bonds?

10 Try to write a definition of each type of bond based on the following comic.

11 What type of bond is this?

12 What about this?

13 Starter

14

15 Objectives Analyze the polarity of molecules and identify polar and non polar ones Apply the polarity rule on real molecules and analyze its effect

16 Electronegativity It’s the affinity of an atom to attract electrons
E.g. : Oxygen is more electronegative than hydrogen So if we have a covalent bond between oxygen and hydrogen, how would it look like?

17

18 1. Which would represent the correct dipole?
There is no dipole B because the electronegativity is greater on atom A

19 2. Which would be the best description for the bond?
nonpolar covalent moderately polar covalent very polar covalent ionic B because the electronegativity is greater on atom A, but not a great difference. Some students may chose C; this may be an acceptable answer since there are no values on the scales (definitely not ionic since the sim is called “ Molecule Polarity” . Ionic compounds are not molecules.

20 3. The molecule shown would be described with
polar bonds, nonpolar molecule nonpolar bonds, nonpolar molecule polar bonds, polar molecule nonpolar bonds, polar molecule A Make sure to ask :How did you decide?

21 4. The bond dipole and molecular dipole would be
, no molecule dipole , A Make sure to ask :How did you decide?

22 5. The molecule shown would be described with
polar bonds, nonpolar molecule nonpolar bonds, nonpolar molecule polar bonds, polar molecule nonpolar bonds, polar molecule B Make sure to ask :How did you decide? Draw the dipoles on your notes – There aren’t any

23 6. The molecule shown would be described with
polar bonds, nonpolar molecule nonpolar bonds, nonpolar molecule polar bonds, polar molecule nonpolar bonds, polar molecule C Make sure to ask :How did you decide?

24 7. Draw the dipole representations
C Make sure to ask :How did you decide?

25 7ans. Draw the dipole representations
Run the sim to demonstrate
