9 Why might variance in program directors’ evaluations by program faculty occur?

10 Why might this variance in evaluations occur?
There are some REALLY good Program Directors and some REALLY Bad ones in certain points There is no consistent training in assuming the position of program director and some are naturally better leaders than others There is no job description for program directors and therefore evaluations are dependent on individual faculty members’ expectations

11 Why might this variance in evaluations occur?
Evaluations may be a reflection of faculty members’ good citizenship Evaluations may be a reflection of the Program Director’s likeability or ‘assume-all’ stance (matriarchal/patriarchal leadership style) Junior Faculty Guiding those who evaluate them Others

12 Now is the time for Clarification of the Role of Program Director so that there is a meaningful and documentable charge!

13 A TIME FOR REFLECTION!!! What are some common errors that might be made as Program Directors that lead to inefficiency and non-productive outcomes?

14 Some Common Errors Assuming that faculty are unable to read— inordinate amount of time spend on informing faculty Keeping secrets—hiding problems Fear-based decision-making Meetings highlighted as primarily gripe sessions Too few meetings

15 Some Common Errors (cont.)
Meetings are primarily discussion sessions vs. problem-solving-outcomes work sessions Agendas w/no follow-up (lost critical items) Majority-vote philosophy without effort to integrate the lone voices

16 Some Common Errors Privately Lobbying for support of perspective— creates factions and divisiveness Taking on EVERYTHING!! Taking on NOTHING—full delegation of responsibilities. Advocating and Knowing ONLY one discipline: an adversarial position with others

17 Structuring the Responsibilities
Orchestration of meetings/agendas Facilitation of data collection/input Monitoring compliance w/ standards and ID of assessments Documentation of reports and continuous improvement efforts

18 Clarifying Focus of Responsibilities
Insuring Compliance to University Policies—Service as a Reminder/Cheerleader (e.g., TracDat; LiveText; Vitae) for continuous improvement Providing space for faculty accolades and affirmation Regularly scheduled meetings (same day; same time; identified at beginning of the academic year Collaborative Admissions Review/Students’ Annual Review Monitoring the pool and evaluation of adjunct faculty Overseeing expenditures and balances (e.g., HEF, course fees)

19 Clarifying Focus of Responsibilities
