2 You should be familiar with the use and location of all the safety equipment in the science laboratory emergency eyewash & shower room exits first-aid kit fire extinguisher

3 SAFETY RULES 1. Follow all instructions carefully

4 2. Never do laboratory work unless it is teacher supervised

5 3. Always wear protective eyewear and dress properly for the lab unless otherwise instructed by your teacher.

7 4. Never run, push, or engage in horseplay of any kind
5. Never eat, drink, or apply cosmetics in the laboratory

8 6. Report any accident, spill, or breakage to the teacher IMMEDIATELY

9 7. Use care when working with electricity
Make sure electrical cords are not in the way Make sure your hands and area are dry

10 8. Be careful with laboratory glassware
Never use chipped or cracked glass Never keep glassware close to the edge of a table Never use your bare hands to clean up glass!

11 9. Be careful with heat or fire
Use tongs to handle hot containers or materials. Heat liquids slowly Point container being heated away from other people Turn hot plates off when not in use

12 Notify your teacher in case of a burn
Notify your teacher in case of a burn. Minor burns should be soaked immediately in cold running water

13 10. Use extreme care when working with chemicals.
Always read labels and treat chemicals as dangerous Never mix chemicals unless instructed to do so

14 Never taste substances in the laboratory
Notify teacher immediately of any spills or exposure to chemicals. If you spill chemicals on your skin, wash with running water.

15 If chemicals splash in your eyes, use an eye wash

16 Additional safety procedures
To transfer a solid to a test tube, use a small piece of paper to pour the measured material onto, and then pour the paper into the test tube. Use a funnel to transfer a liquid into a container with a small mouth.

17 To check the odor of an unknown substance, hold the container away from your face and wave the air toward your nose.
