2. Research Integrity/ Scholarly Conduct
Researchers shall strive to follow the best research practices honestly, accountably, openly and fairly in the search for and in the dissemination of knowledge. In addition, researchers shall follow the requirements of applicable institutional policies and professional or disciplinary standards and shall comply with applicable laws and regulations.

3. Components of Scholarly Conduct
maintaining honesty and rigor in academic publishing
representing accurately and honestly research observations and findings
using statistics and other methods of data analysis and evaluation appropriately and responsibly
giving due credit to those responsible for the work, words, and ideas presented

4. Components of Scholarly Conduct
adhering to the standards or codes of ethics for one's academic or professional discipline
disclosing any relationships, financial, personal, or professional, that might be perceived to compromise one's judgment or impartiality, or constitute a Conflict of Interest
facilitating the exchange of knowledge among researchers at all levels of experience by encouraging a climate of intellectual collaboration and trust

9. Ethics – Research with Humans (RCH-020-010)
Research with humans or human biological material must be reviewed by the Research Ethics Board (REB) before you start the research.
Remember that the REB process is iterative. It is okay to ask the REB why specific recommendations were made or if there are other ways to address the issue.
Funds will not be released until REB approval is in place, but there is a process to allow access to some funds for preparatory work.

10. Care and Use of Animals (RCH-020-005)
All research and education activities involving animals must be reviewed and approved by the President’s Committee on Animal Care.
Animal purchases need to conform with the approved protocol.
Talk to your Department Head/Dean before designing an experiment with animals housed at UofR to ensure the facility can accommodate the number and type of animal.

11. Conflict of Interest and Conflict of Commitment (GOV-022-025)
Members may not participate in University decisions and processes where they have a professional obligation to act in the best interests of the University but have a personal interest that will interfere with that professional obligation.
Members may not engage in external employment or professional activities that interfere with their responsibilities and obligations to the University.

12. Research Cost Recovery (RCH-030-005)
All research funding agreements must include an allowance for the University Indirect Cost Recovery Rate at a minimum rate of 25% of direct costs. This should be built into grants and contracts.
Tri-Council (SSHRC, NSERC, CIHR) are exempt, and there is a procedure for requesting a lowered amount from other agencies.

13. Research Cost Recovery (RCH-030-005)
The Research Office signs off on all external grant applications and contracts on behalf of the university. Your dean (or designate) and Department Head (as applicable) sign the Funded Research Approval Form. Use this form as an opportunity to discuss your research needs with him/her.
The Research Office will assist you with budget preparation to ensure you include indirect costs where appropriate.

14. Budgetary Limits on Spending Research Funds (RCH-030-010 )
Research funds should not go into a deficit position. Researchers must budget their expenses in accordance with the schedule of revenue.
In the case of multi-year grants, the researcher may incur a deficit to a maximum of 10% of the grant receivable for the next fiscal year, until the final year.
For contracts where funds are received after work is performed, approval may be given for a deficit position.
