1 Simplifying Expressions
Designed and Developed by: Linda Garcia Bachelors In Interdisciplinary Studies An online tutorial for 5th grade students

2 This manual is intended to be used by 5th grade students who have had a basic introduction lesson on how to simplify expressions. Targeted TEKS: (4) Algebraic reasoning. The student applies mathematical process standards to develop concepts of expressions and equations. The student is expected to: (F) Simplify numerical expressions that do not involve exponents, including up to two levels of grouping The student must complete a series of steps to self-guide themselves in learning how to use GEMDAS or PEMDAS, taking notes as they go along, and complete a set of independent practice problems as they learn how to simplify expressions. To successfully master this TEK, students must complete all phases of the program till the end.

5 Training Tutorial step-by-step course manual Section 1 GEMDAS Review
Before starting this tutorial, you must be familiar with GEMDAS or PEMDAS which are the rules for simplifying expressions. Here is a quick review of GEMDAS. Training Tutorial step-by-step course manual Section 1 GEMDAS Review When simplifying expressions we must work out problems in a left to right direction. The picture above shows in what order we will begin to simplify our expressions. We begin first by looking for any groupings that include either parentheses or brackets. Groupings in an expression must be solved out first. Once all groupings have been simplified we move on to second exponents, third multiplication or division, and last addition or subtraction. The tutorial video will explain more.

6 Training Tutorial step-by-step course manual Quick Tip
Here is a quick way to remember the order of GEMDAS. GEMDAS Rules Training Tutorial step-by-step course manual Quick Tip You can remember the order by saying: Grace, Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally r o u p s x p o n e t s u l t p i c a n i v s o n addition ubtraction

You have now reached the assessment part of the e-learning manual. In order to be able to complete the assessment you must have access to your IXL account. (The IXL registration should have already been completed by your teacher beforehand. A username and password should have been given to you by your school or teacher. ) In order to log in, please click the IXL link below. Select the blue math tab and scroll down to fifth-grade skills. Select the fifth-grade skills and look for topic U3. This is the topic that will be used for assessment purposes. Please have your learning journal available to work out problems when needed. Your progress and score is displayed on the right side of the screen as you complete the assessment section. Scores will be automatically recorded for your teacher to view as well.
