The desktop Icons You can click on an icon to open a program quickly. Examples of programs are Internet Explorer My Computer Microsoft Word Start button You can use the start menu to open programs open documents Your computer might have a different start button. 15 The different mouse shapes
You see different shapes on the screen when you move the mouse on the table. You will see an arrow when you move the mouse over the desktop tools menu bar You will see a capital letter i (I) when you move the mouse over normal text. You will see a hand shape when you move the mouse over parts of a web page. 15

16 Have a go Use the mouse and start button 1. Use the mouse.
2. Use the left mouse button. 3. Do 1 click on the start button. 4. The start menu will open. 16

17 Have a go Open a program – activity 1 1. Move the mouse onto an icon.
2. Use the left mouse button. 3. Do 2 quick clicks on the left mouse button. This is also called a double click. 4. The program will open. 17

18 Open a program – activity 2
1. Move the mouse over the icon. 2. Use the left mouse button. 3. Do 1 click on the left mouse button. 4. You will highlight the icon. The program will not open. 5. To open the program, press the Enter key on the keyboard. Hint When you click the right mouse button on the desktop you will see a pop-up menu. You can make this go away. 1. Move the mouse to the empty desktop. 2. Do 1 click on the left mouse button OR 3. Press the Esc key on the keyboard. 18

19 Turn off the computer 1. Use the mouse.
2. Move the mouse over the start button. 1. Use the left mouse button. 2. Do 1 click on the start button. 3. You will see the start menu. 4. Move the mouse over the Shut Down. 5. Use the left mouse button. 6. Do 1 click on the Shut Down. 7. Move the mouse to the OK button. 8. Use the left mouse button. 9. Do 1 click on the OK button. 19
