What is Ageism? Stereotyping and discriminating against individuals on the basis of their age. Prejudicial attitudes towards older people, and old age Discriminatory practices against older people Institutional practices and policies that perpetuate stereotypes about elderly people.

What were the objectives of the movement?
Primary goal was to advocate for older people’s rights Supported increase of welfare payments Wanted to create/fund a single payer, nonprofit, and universal health care system

Supported reproductive rights Supported the abolition of the death penalty Advocated that the U.S government should work toward developing alternative energy sources and create new jobs

Who were the key leaders and organizations?
Maggie Kuhn - founder or the Gray Panthers who fought against age discrimination in America. Aided with the low-cost housing for the elderly

Gray panthers Started up in Philadelphia during the 1970s.
The organization was initially known as the Consultation of Older and Younger Adults for Social Change The group’s main goal was to changing the mandatory retirement age.

Gray panther Accomplishments
Took action against Ageism United with Ralph Nader's Retired Professional Action Group (RPAG) in order to monitor the hearing aid industry. Industry was discriminating against older people. RPAG published a report documenting “acts of unscrupulous sales practices in the hearing aid industry.”

Alliance for retired Americans
Alliance for Retired Americans was founded by a coalition of AFL-CIO affiliated union and community groups and aims to protect the rights of retired/older Americans. With more than 4.3 million members, the work towards making their voices heard in the law, policies, politics, and institutions that shape American life. Current: Prevented cuts to important social programs like Social Security through legislative action.

NASUAD Founded in 1964 Non - profit association Representing the nation’s 56 officially designated state and territorial agencies on aging.

American Geriatrics society
One of the largest professional organization of health care providers. Provides leadership to healthcare professionals, policy makers and the public Implements and advocates for programs in patient care, professional and public education etc.

National Clearinghouse On Abuse in Later Life
NCALL Established in 2002 Provides training and assistance to any abused in “later life” Mission Statement: “Through advocacy and education, the National Clearinghouse on Abuse in Later Life (NCALL) works everyday to improve victim safety, increase abuser accountability, expand coordinated community response, and put an end to abuse in later life.”

Gray Panthers v. Schweiker(1980) Case brought by the Gray Panthers and three named beneficiaries of the Medicare programs Challenged procedures aiding in the resolving of program benefits less than $100.

Age discrimination employment act (1967)

Older Workers benefit protection act of 1990
amended the ADEA to specifically prohibit employers from denying benefits to older employees protects employees when they sign liability waivers for age discrimination in exchange for severance packages

Older American Act 1965 Congress passed the Older American Act in response to concerns by policymakers about a lack of community social services for older persons. The OAA includes community services employment for low- income older Americans; training research demonstration activities in the field of aging vulnerable elder rights protection activities
