Do Now – 9/20/16 12 Angry Men – Anticipation Questions
Respond Agree or Disagree, based on your own experiences. Then, write a few words or lines which explain why you agree or disagree. Support your response with real world examples and your own experiences Statement and Opinion 1. It is easy to hold an opinion that is not the majority. 2. If someone is found guilty by a court of law, then that person is guilty of that crime. 3. It is important as an American to serve on a jury. 4. If I found myself in a courtroom, I would want a jury of my peers to decide my fate. 5. There are more criminals from poorer areas than from other areas. 6. Everybody is innocent until proven guilty. 7. Juries are fair and impartial. 8. Currently, a jury must reach a unanimous decision on a defendant’s guilt or innocence. Should this be changed to a majority vote? 9. Everyone has biases towards certain races, ethnicities, gender, etc. 10. The death penalty is a fair penalty for certain crimes. 11. Victims and victim families should have a say in the defendant’s punishment.

Act I – take note of what happens
1. What does the judge say about reasonable doubt? What is reasonable doubt? 2. Describe the jury room, in detail. How would this room make you feel? 3. What is the opinion of the majority of the jurors toward the boy’s guilt? 4. Why does juror 8 say, “I think maybe we owe him a few words”? 5. What are the four main arguments for the boy’s guilt in this case? 6. Who is juror 10 referring to when he says “them”? What does this reveal? Should this man be on a jury? 7. What type of father is Juror 3? 8. How has Juror 8 discredited the knife?

Act II – take note of what happens
How does the result of the second vote create a conflict between juror THREE and jurors FIVE< ELEVEN< and NINE? What is the connection between the el train’s noise and the old man’s testimony? Reread the comments NINE makes about the old man. Are NINE’s comments based on fact or do they reflect his personal feelings? Explain. What is the significance about TEN’s comments that the defendant’s “don’t even speak good English”? How does this comment affect ELEVEN? FIVE? Is the comment consistent with TEN’s previous behavior? How does EIGHT interpret the result of his timed experiment? In Act II, THREE contradicts his earlier views? In what ways?
