G.K. Chesterton was born on May 29, 1874 in London. He was an English writer, lay theologian, poet, dramatist, journalist, orator, literary and art critic, biographer, and Christian apologist.

3 Chesterton is well known for his reasoned apologetics and even people who disagreed with him have recognized the universal appeal of such works as “Orthodoxy” and “The Everlasting Man”.

4 Chesterton wrote around 80 books, several hundred poems, around 200 short stories, 4000 essays, and several plays. He was a literary and social critic, historian, playwright, novelist, Catholic theologian and apologist, debater, and mystery writer.

Chesterton's writings consistently displayed wit and a sense of humor. He enjoyed using paradox, when making serious comments on the world, government, politics, economics, philosophy, theology and many other topics.

6 Chesterton aimed to provoke thought from his audience
Chesterton aimed to provoke thought from his audience. He sought to open the eyes of people and urge them to truly look at the world around them by encouraging them to think more profoundly about things. His writings contained depth and insight and they required readers to delve into thought rather than just scratch the surface.

7 Chesterton's style and thinking were all his own
Chesterton's style and thinking were all his own. He encouraged his readers to think critically and this seen throughout all of his works. “The way to love anything is to realize that it may be lost.” “The Bible tells us to love our neighbors, and also to love our enemies; probably because generally they are the same people.” “The modern city is ugly not because it is a city but because it is not enough of a city, because it is a jungle, because it is confused and anarchic, and surging with selfish and materialistic energies.”

8 Chesterton has had an influence on contemporary and subsequent defenders of the faith. Etienne Gilson, the great medievalist, said that Orthodoxy was the best apologetic the 20th century had yet produced. Chesterton also had an immense impact on authors like C. S. Lewis (The Chronicles of Narnia) and J. R. R. Tolkien (The Lord of The Rings).

9 Chesterton's “The Everlasting Man” contributed to C. S
Chesterton's “The Everlasting Man” contributed to C. S. Lewis's conversion to Christianity. In a letter to Sheldon Vanauken, Lewis calls the book "the best popular apologetic I know“ and to Rhonda Bodle he wrote, "the best popular defence of the full Christian position I know is GK Chesterton's The Everlasting Man". C.S. Lewis also included the book in a list of 10 books that "most shaped his vocational attitude and philosophy of life“.
