THE MIGRATION TO MASS BAY WAS LED BY THE PURITANS THE PURITANS DID NOT WANT TO SEPARATE FROM CHURCH OF ENGLAND- THEY JUST WANTED TO PURIFY IT FROM EXCESSES EX. ORGAN MUSIC, DECORATIONS, THE PURITANS WERE A POWERFUL GROUP IN ENGLAND

PURITAN LEADERS FELT THEY NEEDED TO LEAVE ENGLAND THEY RECEIVED A CHARTER FROM MBC- MASSACHUSETTS BAY COMPANY JOHN WINTHROP BECAME THE FIRST GOV OF THE COLONY

GOVERNING THE COLONY ALL COLONISTS WORKED, BUT NOT ALL COULD MAKE DECISIONS ACC TO CHARTER, ONLY STOCKHOLDERS OF MBC COULD VOTE MOST SETTLERS RESENTED THIS LACK OF PARTICIPATION

WINTHROP NOTICED THE DISCONTENT CHANGED IT SO ANY MALE WHO WAS A CHURCH MEMBER COULD NOW VOTE ALSO MALE CHURCH MEMBERS COULD BE ELECTED TO THE GENERAL COURT MBC COLONY PROSPERED- MANY PPL CAME AND SETTLED IN BOSTON- KNOWN AS GREAT MIGRATION- BECAME LARGEST TOWN.

PROBLEMS IN MBC PURITAN LEADERS DID NOT LIKE ANYONE TO QUESTION THEIR AUTHORITY USUALLY DISCONTENTED COLONISTS LEFT THE COLONY SOME COLONISTS WHO LEFT, FOUNDED OTHER COLONIES

CONNECTICUT THOMAS HOOKER FOUNDED CONNECTICUT
HE WANTED TO SET UP A COLONY WITH STRICT LIMITS ON GOVT FUNDAMENTAL ORDERS OF CONNECTICUT- PLAN OF GOVT ALLOWED ALL LANDOWNERS TO VOTE, ALSO LIMITED GOVERNOR’S POWER. CONNECTICUT BECAME SEPARATE COLONY IN STARTED OUT AS PART OF MASS.

RHODE ISLAND ROGER WILLIAMS FOUNDED RHODE ISLAND
WILLIAMS FELT IN MASS CHURCH HAD TOO MUCH POWER WANTED TO SETUP COLONY WITH SEPERATION OF CHURCH AND STATE SET UP RHODE ISLAND ON PRINCIPLE OF RELIGIOUS TOLERANCE

RELIGIOUS TOLERANCE- A WILLINGNESS TO LET OTHERS PRACTICE THEIR OWN BELIEFS
IN MASS- NON PURITANS COULD NOT WORSHIP FREELY WILLIAMS WAS KICKED OUT OF MASS FOR HIS BELIEFS AND SET UP RI COLONY INSTEAD. ALL JEWS, PROTESTANTS AND CATHOLICS COULD PRACTICE RELIGION IN RI PROVIDENCE WAS MAIN CITY

ANNE HUTCHINSON LIVED IN MBC- QUESTIONED SOME PURITAN TEACHINGS
APPEARED BEFORE GENERAL COURT- CLAIMED GOD SPOKE TO HER BANISHED FROM COLONY AS HERETIC SHE CAME TO LIVE IN RHODE ISLAND AS WELL.

PURITANS AT WAR WITH NATIVES
PURITANS HAD MANY CONFLICTS WITH NATIVE AMERICANS THEY CONTINUED TO TAKE OVER NATIVE AM LANDS METACOM’S WAR- HE FOUGHT WITH THE SETTLERS, BUT EVENTUALLY WAS DEFEATED. NEW HAMPSHIRE BECAME A SEPARATE COLONY WHEN MASS BECAME TOO BIG.

LIFE IN NEW ENGLAND PURITANS BELIEVED THAT WORSHIP AND LOCAL MATTERS SHOULD BE PERFORMED AS A COMMUNITY THE MEETINGHOUSE WAS WHERE PURITANS WORSHIPPED AND HAD TOWN MEETINGS SABBATH- HOLY DAY OF REST- ON SUNDAY NOONE COULD VISIT TAVERNS TO TELL JOKES OR DRINK ALL CITIZENS HAD TO ATTEND CHURCH

AT TOWN MEETINGS SETTLERS VOTED ON AND DISCUSSED ISSUES
PURITANS HAD VERY STRICT LAWS THE ECONOMY WAS BASED ON FISHING, FARMING, AND LOGGING EVENTUALLY THE PURITANS STARTED TO DECLINE- FEW PPL LEFT ENGLAND FOR RELIGIOUS REASONS
