Basic data of Peshawar 2.8 million Population:
Climate: Semi-arid climate, Summer (May- Sept.) over 40℃, monsoon season Winter (Nov. – Mar.) lowest 4℃, 50% of annual rain Geology: Flat bowl-shaped land enclosed on three sides by mountain ranges, severe earthquake risk 2.8 million Map of Peshawar City Characteristics: One of the oldest living cities in Asia In AD, the center of Buddhist Greco-Roman “Gandhara Art” City’s original ancient site was enclosed within a traditional wall, having sixteen gates Many languages – Urdu, English, Pushto, Hindko are spoken

Background Unexpected rapid urban population increase :
Influx of Afghan refugees, Floods and earthquakes pushed rural population to urban center, Better living environment attract people to cities Unregulated and unplanned growth, with no master plan to guide the growth. Collapse of services and slums like conditions in the urban core. Overcrowding, traffic congestion, and excessive air pollution. Solid Waste Management services below minimal requirement. Water and sanitation coverage rates are low and the quality of service is below standards.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Major Projects
(2012 to present) Establishment of Urban Policy and Planning Unit 2. Development of a Peshawar City Beautification Plan Establishment of Water Supply and Sanitation Company 4. Development of sustainable Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) Projects’ Output by now 6 corridors Mass Transit System will be developed by 2030. 7 corridors for BRT will be planned in next 20 years. 151 new waste collection containers are placed. Water Supply and Sanitation Company started operations in 2014.

No control over the conversion of buildings of historical, cultural and architectural significance into commercial plazas Weak legal and institutional setup to respond to challenges heritage preservation (Remains of the old wall)

No.2 : Clock Tower EXISTING PROPOSED Main features of the proposal are: Restoration of the Historical Clock Tower as a tourist attraction; Removal of encroachments; Pedestrianization of the area to reduce congestion, air pollution and make the area accessible and attractive for the tourists

1. Environmental Benefits The project has significant environmental benefits including the provision of clean and healthy environment to local residents Economic benefits The local people are getting economic benefits from the increased volume of tourists 2. Safety and sustainable point of views The project has increased safety and comfort of the local communities. The parks and playgrounds restored in the project provides a safe and secure environment particularly to women and children to spend their leisure time in a safe and secure environment. 3. Respect for local culture and history Public participation was ensured in each stage of the project design and local architectural style and local life style was fully incorporated in the project

4. Artistic point of views All the elements designed in the project are original and highly creative The basic objective of the project was to enhance the beauty of the City of Peshawar and has greatly achieved its objectives 5. Contribution to the local economy The Provincial Government has invested huge amount of resources on various elements of the project that has created direct financial benefits for the local businesses, communities and contributed to the local economy. Further, the project has a significant positive impact on the local tourism industry that will further enhance the economic utility of the project 6. Best practice model project Due to its immense success and appreciation from all walks of the society, the provincial government is now replication the same project in other six divisional headquarter cities of KP with initial allocation of Pak Rupees three billions
