GROUP 18 FISHING BUSINESS IN GHANA AND THEIR EFFECT IN RELATION TO QUALITY MANAGEMENT
2
INTRODUCTION Nearly ten percent of the population depends on the Fisheries sector which creates direct and indirect employment for over 2.4 million people. In 2010 alone, the industry generated around 190 million dollars, a sum that could be multiplied several times over if the industry were given a boost. The sector is estimated to contribute about 3.9 per cent of the nation‘s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and eleven (11) percent of the Agriculture GDP (GSS, 2008 Budget). For a long time, fish has remained the preferred and cheapest source of animal protein with about seventy five (75) per cent of total annual production being consumed locally.Yet, Ghana’s marine fishing sector is in deep trouble thus–: depleting of stocks, unfair competition combined with higher costs have wiped many local fishermen out, SANITATION PROBLEMS. Those that are still in sector live precarious existences at best.

PROBLEM STATEMENT This include the use of poisonous chemicals and
DEPLETION OF STOCK: it is the reduction in the general level of fish caught, which prevent the realization of the maximum productive capacity HIGH COST OF FISHING INPUTS:causeof fishing input like net ropes, fuel and OUTBOARD MOTOR: THE USE OF OUTMODED PRESERVATION METHOD: That is the use of local and old traditional way for preserving USE OF DESTRUCTIVE METHODS OF FISHING : This include the use of poisonous chemicals and explosives, ghost fishing by catch etc SANITATION PROBLEMS :That is poor environmental condition
4
DISCUSSION DEPLETIONS OF STOCK: it is the reduction in the general level of fish caught, which prevent the realization of the maximum productive capacity. This happen due to several reason such as climate changes :As sea temperatures change, fish numbers will change and fish will move to different areas , some species will go extinct in particular areas, predators and prey will move to different areas, disrupting food chains wetlands and other low lying habitats where fish reproduce will be covered by rising sea levels. The use of light to fish: Fishermen at the James Town Beach have expressed concern about the continuous use of light for fishing by some fishermen despite several attempts to stop the practice in the area. Increase in the level of fish consumption: An increase in population level has lead to an increase in the level of fish consumption, with this fisherman are not able to meet the level of consumptions which has lead to overexploitation and has gradually lead to the depletion of stock.

Contin……. FUEL AND OUTBOARD MOTOR.
HIGH COST OF FISHING INPUTS LIKE NETS,ROPES, FUEL AND OUTBOARD MOTOR. It is quite unfortunate that most of the fishing input Are not produced in Ghana but rather imported. The high prices of imported goods has rendered these Equipment to be relatively high. This has made it Impossible for fisherman to acquire these equipment To improve upon their daily activities to generate Greater output.
6
The use of destructive fishing methods.
Contin… The use of destructive fishing methods. This include the use of poisonous chemicals and explosives, ghost fishing by catch etc. The use of poisons to kill or stun fish is very common in both fresh and salt water including lagoons. This negatively affected the ecosystem since plant based substances are replaced by chemical poisons. This apparently kills all the organisms in the ecosystem. The use of explosives for blasting fishes has been around for centuries and its on the increase. They kill not only the target fish but all other surrounding fishes. Reconstruction of the damage habitats can take decades .
7
Contin.. SANITATION PROBLEMS
Human activities are major responsible for water pollution . Water pollutions affect the fish Severely and proves lethal to them. This may come In a from of feaces ,plastic waste etc. This reduces the oxygen content in the water which causes Ammonia build up which result in fish poison . Also fishes become prone to diseases.
8
Quality in Relation to the Problem
Technological environment In relation to quality, for a business to survive, it must meet it environmental requirement Which involves the need to be abreast with technological knowledge. There is a need for fisherman to be trained in the use of sophisticated equipment to increase their output. Ecological environments(changing patterns of the weather and physical environment) There is a need for fisherman to know the seasons ,thus the change in the weather and the physical environment in which they operate.
9
Quality Assurance- Fitness to Cost
There is a need for fisherman to adopt a proactive way of doing things instead of it been reactive. Thus the fisherman should concentrate on the process instead of the final product. That is DOING IT RIGHT THE FIRST TIME IS KEY.
10
INNOVATIVE AND CREATIVE SOLUTIONS
EDUCATION There should be a proper education on the upgraded method of fishing ,the causes and the effect of improper fishing ,such as the uses of chemical and using light to fish Rights-based management and Individual Fishing Quotas. Refers to the allocation of rights to fishers, fishing vessels or fishing organizations. By allocating shares to authorized participants in the fishery, In a form of the total allowable catch or a share of the total allowable effort, such as days at sea. Alternative financing mechanisms can be applied to fisheries . They offer potential for promoting actions oriented to conserving and sustainably exploiting fish stocks and marine resources rather than overexploiting them. Market- based incentives, Increasing consumer awareness about the state of fisheries, and more ethical purchasing choices, holds promise for the future of market-based mechanisms to promote sustainable fisheries.
11
Contin…. Economic incentives need to be reoriented
Many economic incentives contribute to the overexploitation of fish stocks, and act as barriers to achieving sustainability. Incentives such as subsidies may prevent industry from responding to signs of overexploitation and continue to fish beyond the point at which it would otherwise be unprofitable Invest in technological innovation and transfer. The government should invest in technological innovation, such as providing them with commercial fishing boats, good fishing net and premix fuel rather than then the use traditional method for fishing. SANITATION PROBLEMS Fisherman and individual who live in the coastal areas should be encourage and educate on the effect and cause of poor sanitation alone the coastal areas Modern way of preserving fish The government should invest in providing more fish processing industries that will help preserve the fish.

Conclusion In conclusion , it can be said that the problems in the fishery sector has grown out of hand which has resulted in the gradual destruction of various water bodies. We concluded that a regulatory body should supervise activities along the shore to check overfishing the use of chemicals, sanitation problems etc.
