“shadow of death” (35.74)
The poet uses shadow of death to describe Grendel. Grendel comes like a “shadow,” “unseen” by the Danes he will eventually kill. He cannot be captured, for a shadow cannot be captured. Grendel hunts in the darkness, creating his shadow in the mead-hall, killing as many Danes as he can. (50 words)

“shepherd of evil” (41.273)
This kenning for Grendel uses some irony in that a shepherd usually suggests positive connotations. A shepherd watches over his flock, taking care of them, making sure the sheep have ample food and water and safe place to rest. Here, however, the poet shatters the image of careful caretaking and suggests that Grendel only “takes care” of evil, harboring and nurturing evil, caring for and ensuring the death and destruction of all that is good. (75 words)
