Can, Could and Be able to

Express ABILITY We use the three of them to say if someone is capable to do something. EXAMPLE: Frank can sing. George could drive a car. Marie will be able to swim in summer.

However, CAN can only be used in the present simple or in the simple past.
EXAMPLE: Howie can give a speech for 2 hours. John could ride a bike. If we need to talk about a situation in the present perfect or in the future; or even a possible situation, we need to use BE ABLE TO. EXAMPLE: Paul will be able to come to the party. Sarah might be able to walk again. Ema has been able to work well. Tim would be able to read in German.
