1 Carbon Dioxide

2 Adding acid to carbonates
Carbonates are compounds containing carbon and oxygen. When an acid is added to a carbonate the carbonate starts to fizz. A gas called carbon dioxide is produced. Carbon Dioxide is heavier than air so it stays in the test tube. We can not see it or smell it. Carbon Dioxide

3 Adding acid to carbonates
Calcium Carbonate + Hydrochloric AcidCalcium Chloride+water+Carbon Dioxide CaCO HCl  CaCl2 + H2O +CO2 The equation must be balanced Carbon Dioxide

4 Testing for carbon dioxide
Proves Gas is Carbon Dioxide Gas Limewater Limewater turns milky/cloudy

5 Adding acid to carbonates
Calcium Hydroxide(limewater)+Carbon Dioxide Calcium Carbonate water Ca(OH)2 + CO2  CaCO3 + H2O The equation is balanced Gas Proves Gas is Carbon Dioxide Limewater Limewater turns milky/cloudy

6 Uses of Carbon Dioxide Fire Extinguishers Fizzy Drinks
Dry Ice (Stage Effects)
