Linear Perspective A technique for suggesting depth in a picture by making parallel lines meet at a vanishing point. Makes objects look 3-D. Invented by Renaissance Artists to create a sense of realism in artworks.

Horizon Line (or Eye-Level) This is a line that divides your paper into two sections: the earth and the sky. This is the first line we locate when making a perspective drawing. There can only be one eye-level line in order for the most realistic results. Anything below the horizon line- You will only be able to see the top of an object. Anything above the horizon line- You will only be able to see the bottom of an object. Horizon Line

Vanishing Point A dot on the HORIZON Line where all the lines that go away from, or come towards, the viewer seem to meet. Vanishing Point

Receding Lines These lines recede back to the vanishing point. Receding Lines Parallel Lines Two lines that remain an equal distance apart. Vertical or Horizontal Lines Parallel lines that go up and down (vertical) Parallel Lines Or left to right (horizontal). These lines do not go to the vanishing point.

Perspective: A review of basic terms and techniques
One-Point Perspective Objects having only one vanishing point.
7
Label both of these pictures on your handout:
Horizon line Vanishing point At least 4 Receding lines At least 4 vertical lines At least 4 horizontal lines
8
Step – By - Step Draw a Horizon Line Add a Vanishing Point
Draw a box around the VP To make this the INSIDE of a box, draw the Receding Lines to the VP from each corner
9
Step – By - Step Draw a Horizontal Line to indicate the Bottom of the box (inside view remember) Draw a Vertical Line to indicate the bottom of the box again, this time to the left Draw the next Horizontal line Draw the next Vertical line Erase the extra lines that extend past the bottom view of the box (leave the vanishing point ALWAYS until the very end of the drawing
10
Step – By - Step Add a box above this box
Bring the Receding Lines for the bottom of the box to the Vanishing Point Bring the Receding Lines for the top (inside) of the box to the Vanishing Point REMEMBER TO DRAW LIGHT ‘TIL IT’S RIGHT SO WE CAN ERASE OUR EXTRA LINES!! Draw the horizontal and vertical lines that indicate the inside bottom of the top box, and erase your extra receding lines
11
Step – By - Step Now try a box underneath – follow the same steps
12
Step – By - Step Up for a challenge?
Add more boxes – how does it look when the boxes move the right of the Vanishing Point? To the left? What about adding shading and/or lines that slowly get closer together as they recede into the box?
