1 Adobe software utilization
Page Layout……………………... Drawing and Illustration………… Image Editing……………………. Web Design……………………... Web Graphics / Animation……… Web Document Sharing…………. In - Design Illustrator Photoshop Go Live Designer Acrobat

2 Two types of Computer Graphics
Rasters Vectors

3 Pixels The individual dots of light that make up the basic units of a raster image Pixels are square or rectangular in shape The term pixel is short for picture elements which refer to the individual dots that show on a computer screen The higher the number of pixels the sharper the image

4 Raster Images A digital image composed of pixels
Also called a ‘bitmap” The type of digital images that are edited in Adobe Photoshop

5 Vector images The type of digital images made up of paths and anchor points and are defined in the computer by a mathematical equation Vectors are created and modified in Adobe Illustrator Infinitely scalable without losing an images sharpness

6 Palettes Floating windows that contain controls for modifying images and type Common to all Adobe applications

7 2 ways to orient a document
Portrait - short edge is at top and bottom Landscape - long edge is at top and bottom L P

8 Layers Cross - sections of a document that allow a graphic designer to isolate individual graphic elements within a layout Organizational technique controlled in the layers palette Essential to Photoshop work but also used extensively in Illustrator and InDesign

9 Layer Thumbnail A small graphic representation of a layers content
Appears on the left side of the layers palette

10 Opacity A percentage that indicates the amount of transparency of a layer or object 100% opacity = opaque 1% opacity = transluscent

11 Rulers Measuring instrument located at the top and left side of a workspace Units include: Pixels Points Picas Inches Centimeters Percent

12 Ruler Guides Used for aligning graphic objects and type objects
Non-printing lines that transfer measurements from the rulers onto the page

13 Marquee tools Photoshop tool used to select graphics
A series of animated dotted lines (“chasing ants”) which indicate a selection based on the shape of a raster image

14 Fastening Point The origin of a selection
The first anchor point within a marquee

15 What are the methods (and tools) used to make selections?
Magic wand - selects images by pixels Eye Dropper - selects images by color Lasso tools - selects images by custom shape Marquee tools - selects images by geometric shape

16 Defringing Replacing pixels around the perimeter of a Photoshop graphic with the colors of other nearby pixels Used to eliminate unwanted pixels (halo effect) around an imported graphic

17 Compositing Combining images from other sources into a Photoshop layout Sources of Images include: internet graphics, digital cameras, scanned images, other photoshop files

18 Cropping Technique to trim away parts of a photograph

19 Rule of Thirds Guideline that Graphic Designers and Photographers follow when composing and cropping images Suggests four possible points of focus in an image

20 Hue, Saturation, Value Hue - color
Saturation - purity of a particular hue Value - lightness and darkness of a hue how much white or black is in a hue

21 How does a clone stamp work?
Samples a group of pixels and replaces them in a different location

22 What is a “Mask” A mask is a selected area that can be protected or modified A mask can be applied to a layer (Photoshop) or and Object (Illustrator)

23 What is a “vignette” An effect that uses feathering to fade a marquee shape

24 Flattening Merges all visible layers into a single background layer and discards all hidden layers This technique is used at the end of a Photoshop project to reduce the size of a file

25 Frames The placeholders for text and images in Adobe InDesign
