What Is Part Of Speech A Part Of Speech is a group of words that are used in a certain way In other words, all words in the English language are divided into eight different categories Each category has a different role/function in the sentence One important point to note is that many words are used in more than one way This means that a word can function as several different parts of speech SNSCT Parts of Speech

Noun A Noun is a word that names a person, a place or a thing Example:

Pronoun A Pronoun is a word that is used instead of a noun
For example, consider the sentence “Lisa is a nice girl.” We can replace the noun "Lisa" with the pronoun "She" and make it as "She is a nice girl." Examples of Pronoun I, he, it, we, them, us, mine, itself, etc Example sentences He doesn't want go with them. Would they help us? SNSCT Parts of Speech

Adjective An Adjective is a word that describes a person or thing

Verb A Verb is a word or group of words that express an action or a state Example: The boy hits the ball Example sentences: 1. He drove for hours. 2. I think that he is right. SNSCT Parts of Speech

Adverb An Adverb is a word that gives more information about a verb, an adjective, another adverb, or even the entire sentence Example: He jumped so fast Example Sentences: 1.She runs quickly. (adverb describing a verb) 2.She is so beautiful. (adverb describing a adjective) 3.She smokes very rarely. (adverb describing an adverb) SNSCT Parts of Speech

Preposition A Preposition is a word that is used before a noun or a pronoun to connect it to another word in the sentence It is usually shows any one of the following 1.Location 2.Direction 3.Time Examples: On, in, at, by, under, above, beside, to, out, from, for, etc. Example sentences: 1.I sat on the floor. 2.We will meet at four o'clock. Conjunction A Conjunction is a word that joins parts of a sentence together The word "conjunction" comes from the Latin word Conjungere (join together) Examples: And, but, or, because, so, etc Example sentences: 1.I want to come, but I can't. 2.She is smart and beautiful. 3.Would you like a cat or a dog? 4.He didn't pass the test because he didn't understand the subject. 5.We were hungry, so we ordered pizza. Interjection An Interjection is a short sound, word or phrase used to express the speaker's emotion The word "interjection" comes from the Latin word Interjicere (throw between) Examples: Oh! Look out! Ow! Hey! Wow! Ah! Um...,etc Example sentences: 1.Wow, that's amazing! 2.Ah, that was a good meal. 3.Um... I'm not sure what to say. 4.Oh dear! What happened? 5.Hello!
