3 Summary Set in the American South
About a young black girl living in poverty and segregation Sexually abused and assaulted by the man she calls her "father" Two children are taken from her She is separated from her sister Married to a man that treats her no better than her "father" Meets a successful woman who changes Celie's spirit and attitude She is then reunited with her loved ones

4 Some Main characters Celie- young black girl with little knowledge, that grows up to an elderly woman through the novel. At the start of the novel she is very reserved and does what she is told, she is used and taken for granted because she is not very academic and she is a "female" . In the end of the novel she is strong and realises her life can be joyful and her past will not hold her down. Nettie- nettie is Celie's sister and they have a strong relationship, celie was separated from nettie when she was married, nettie is smarter and is shown to have more about her than Celie. Nettie is very positive towards life and grows up to find a husband who treats her right and travels to Africa to help others. Shug avery- Shug is a successful singer, who makes herself happy and doesn't let anyone disrespect her, she is Celie's husbands ex partner. She and Celie become best friends in the novel and have a strong bond. Albert/ Mr. – Celie's husband, he is nasty and horrid, treats everyone with disrespect, he is very troubled but at the end of the novel he is sorry and his attitude changes to a kind hearted man.

Celie says this in page 3 of the novel about her sister nettie, when she is scared of their "father" The topic I have chosen to study is the protrayal of strong female relationships in the novel.

Most powerful female relationships Nettie and Celie Shug Avery and Celie Female relationships are shown to be very significant in the novel. "When nettie's foot came down on the porch I almost die."

10 The impact on the reader
Positives Shows the importance of female relationships in life Shows the reader to not let anyone disrespect themselves and realise there is more to life Negatives Shows how black females living in poor conditions were treated. Shows the reader the bad side to things and may have a bad impact on them Over all I think that the novel shows the importance of being positive and treating others right, and shows how meaningful friendship truly is.
