2. 2013-2015 Partnership building: Njala University, Sierra Leone

Building upon an existing agricultural-based partnership between Illinois and Njala University in Sierra Leone, a team of faculty and graduate students traveled to the School of Community Health Sciences (SCHS) in Bo to establish a new facet of the partnership focused on Global Health. The Illinois-Njala Sustainable & Innovative Global Healthcare Technologies (INSIGHT) program will lead Bioengineering seniors through identification, development, and implementation of a technology, medical training simulator, or biomedical device to address a clinical need. Part of is the instruction includes teaching students to think about how they are used and get integrated into existing technologies, which is a key aspect of success in developing countries.

With support from on-campus funding sources, the development of four new courses for the school year is already underway, and will serve as the backbone for a global health scholars (GHS) certificate program offered through the Center for Global Studies. Courses in the program are an introductory course which is interdisciplinary, and utilizes a one-health perspective, subject specific courses in tropical epidemiology, food security in resource-limited settings, sustainable engineering practices and sustainable marketplaces followed by an interdisciplinary capstone design project. Each of these courses will be developed using a hybrid lecture/online module model, developed specifically to have particular relevance to real-world issues using Sierra Leone as a source for case studies, and made available to Njala students via Moodle.
