Parenthical and Nonrestrictive Elements

Nonrestrictive elements
Can be words, phrases, or clauses. Usually set off by commas. Provides added (nonessential) information to a sentence. Does not limit (restrict) the element it modifies (tells more about)-it’s an appositives. If the added information refers to main topic in the sentence, it is nonrestrictive.

Example Sentence of Nonrestrictive Element:
Hatshepsut, unlike Egyptian royal women before her, ruled as a pharaoh.

Parenthical Elements parentheses are placed around the information
parentheses set it off it shows a break in thought *If the added information doesn’t refer to the main topic in the sentence, it’s Parenthetical.

Example Sentence of Parenthetical Element:
She was a princess before she declared herself pharaoh (king of Egypt).
