1 6th grade English Language Arts Curriculum Night

2 Communication This is the best way to get in touch with me. Voice Mail: Eastin Webpage Review your child’s agenda. Check Website for project requirements and due dates. Monitor grades and missing assignments on ParentVue and StudentVue)Get log in info from Office. Midterm reports(online) and Report Cards(Quarterly) It is difficult for me to take calls during the day. I check my throughout the day. It is a good way to contact me and get quick feedback to questions or comments. I will respond to s within 24 hours. Agendas: Please feel free to send a note in your child’s agenda. I check these each morning, and I will write you a note back so you know I saw it.

3 Helpful Information Before school: Students can be on campus at 8:05. Students are welcome to hang out in the grassy area, play games on the fields, or use the library. School Start August 3, at 8:30. The first bell rings at 8:25 and the tardy bell will ring at 8:30. Agendas/Planners- The agenda is required every day at school. Inside your will find your child’s homework and daily assignments. Please review weekly, as this is your key source of information. Cell phones: Cell phones must be turned off from 8:30-3:30 and in student backpacks at all times. Students should speak with teacher if they need to make an emergency call home. Dress Code: Please review the district dress code on the website. Snacks and water bottles. Please bring a water bottle everyday. You are welcome to eat a snack between classes. However, we have a very strict NO NUT of any kind policy. This is essential for the health of our students.

Write Arguments to support claims. Write informative texts with a well developed topic and precise language. Produce functional writing such as experiments, letters, book reviews, blogs. Conduct research projects, incorporating several sources. Summarizing and synthesizing info. Write narratives with a clear sequence of events and dialogue. Create poetry. Draw evidence from literary or informational text to support reflection and research. Language Workshop Major Standards Ideas and content, organization, voice, word choice, sentence fluency, conventions plus presentation. 6 point rubric scores converted into percentage for the online grade book program.

7 Reading Workshop A sample of concepts your child will be learning:
Conducting short and in-depth research projects to answer a question. Participate in Socratic discussions and Book Clubs and use textual details to support points of view. Determine themes of a text. Applying comprehension strategies to understand fictional and non-fiction reading. Reading critically to determine authors’ point of view. Delineate and evaluate the argument and specific claims in a text. Integrate and evaluate content presented in diverse media and formats.

8 Homework Expectations
Read everyday for at least 30 minutes. Required genres will vary. Complete reading log. 1 book/research project per quarter(Due dates will be announced.) Projects may include blogging, research, or creating. Sometimes unfinished classwork becomes homework. You may be asked to complete class reflections in Google classroom.
