2 Second Great Awakening
Evangelical religious movement that spread through the United States beginning in the early 1800s Americans participated in revivals. Occurred because economic growth and rapid social change led Americans to turn to religious faith for direction.

3 Continued.. The revivals and personal sermons appealed to ordinary Americans. As a result, membership increased in various Protestant denominations

4 New Religious Movements
Utopias were communities designed to create a perfect society 90 different utopias were created in America during the 1800’s and 1850’s

5 Shakers! Shook bodies during worship
Believed in Christ’s second appearance Did not allow marriage and reproduction so the religion faded

6 Mormons! Founder was Joseph Smith Believed in plural marriage
Opposition to Mormon practices often led to violence Joseph Smith

7 Unitarians! Members of a religious reform movement that arose among New England Protestants in late 1700’s Rejected puritan beliefs Believed people could become “perfect”

8 Transcendentalism Philosophy that people can rise above material things in life to reach a higher level of understanding Believed that human beings could reach perfection by acquired acknowledge about God, themselves, and the Universe
