Monday, March 27th Pg. 116 RTW: What are the 5 kingdoms? Objective: I will be able to describe the importance of a common naming system to classify organisms. Agenda: Introduce “Fish Food” Project Get into groups & begin research Homework: Classification Test Friday 3/31 Fish Food Project

2 Fish Food Project!! You will be working in groups and creating a lesson for the class based on your phylum/class/order: PowerPoint Guided Notes Activity Quiz (10 questions) Snack I will give you this week to research and create your documents for your lesson.

Start brainstorming activity/snack ideas Look for habitat/reproduction/human impacts/adaptations By the end of today you should have a list of facts and brainstorm ideas started.

Marine Plants and Algae

7 Plant vs. Algae Parts Plants Algae Leaves- to collect sunlight
Stems - vascular; to bring water up and nutrients down to roots Roots – vascular; gather water and nutrients from substrate Blades or Thallus- to collect sunlight Stipe- non-vascular; to hold blades up toward light & does photosynthesis Holdfast- non-vascular; keeps algae fastened to rock Air bladders – air pockets to keep blades and stipe afloat and closer to light.

8 What are Seaweeds? Kingdom: Protista
Algae: single celled photosynthetic organisms living in a colony.

9 3 Types of algae and Phylums
Green = Chlorophyta Red = Rhodophyta Brown = Phaeophyta

10 Green Algae Phylum: Chlorophyta
Most green algae do not live in the ocean, but there are 3 very common marine types: Enteromorpha = shallow coastal waters Codium = branched, tropical waters Acetabularia = subtidal zone, large single cell (8cm), warm waters, attach to rocks

11 Brown Algae Phylum: Phaeophyta Olive green in color b/c of
mixture of chlorophyll and xanthrophyll (yellow) Provides shelter and nutrients for many organisms. Fucus or rockweed - attaches to rock by the holdfast; has air-filled bladders

12 Brown Algae Kelp – largest seaweed; thrives in cold waters and can reach 30 meters Algin – chemical/ingredients in food, medicine, paints and paper products; Sargassum = floats and provides an important habitat for small marine life

13 Red Algae Phylum = Rhodophyta Most abundant type of marine algae
Found attached on Rocky shores Porphyra – delicacy in Japan Irish Moss – produces carrageenan, used as a binding agent in ice cream, pudding and toothpaste; produces agar used in other foods, medicines, and to grow bacteria. Corallina – produces CaCO3, so it is hard.

14 Parts of Algae & Adaptations
Blades- to collect sunlight Stipe- to hold blades up toward light Holdfast- keeps algae fastened to rock Air bladders – air pockets to keep blades and stipe afloat and closer to light.

15 Adaptations of Marine Algae
Some can float using air bladders in order to get light for photosynthesis. Some have holdfasts to keep them secured in place. Reproduce with sperm and egg or fission Predators= urchins, snails, crabs, and other invertabrates

17 Human Impacts Humans use algae as a food source and in several of our medicines. Excess runoff from agricultural lands can cause harmful algae blooms.
