16
People with AUTISM are NOT stupid, deaf, or wrong
People with AUTISM are NOT stupid, deaf, or wrong. They are just different in some ways.
17
Some of the things that are easy for you-like talking, learning, playing…
18
…and making friends, may be very hard for some people with AUTISM……………
19
…and may be scary or upsetting. One thing that sometimes makes me
feel scared is (4)____.
20
People act differently when they are upset
People act differently when they are upset. Some may cry, get mad, and yell.
21
Others like to be quiet and alone. When I’m upset I usually (5)____
22
Can you name the 5 senses. (6)_________ (7)_________ (8)_________
(9)________ (10)________
23
Some people with AUTISM feel their senses very,
very strongly…
24
…and all the information they receive from their senses can be very overwhelming and distracting.
25
Everyone settle and listen to the soft, background noises in your classroom.
26
Write down 1 noise that you can still hear.
(11)________
27
Now, imagine that all the background noises in your classroom are as loud as the noises in the cafeteria or gym…
28
…and you are trying to complete a reading assignment
…and you are trying to complete a reading assignment. Would the reading assignment be hard or easy for you to complete? (12)________
29
How would that make you feel? (13)_________
30
That’s how it is all the time for some people with AUTISM.
31
Some people with AUTISM have lots and lots of sights, sounds, smells, tastes, and touches that bother them all the time.
32
How would you feel if someone shined a flashlight in your eyes
33
Name 1 noise that makes you want to cover your ears.
(15)_______
34
What is your least favorite smell? (16)__.
35
Sometimes things are too hot, too cold, too sharp, too slimy, or too rough to touch. What is something you don’t like to touch? (17)_______.
36
What food do you never, ever want too eat? (18)_________.
37
Now, imagine all those things you just thought about occurred all day long. How would
you feel? (19)______.
38
Can you understand why some people with AUTISM seem upset, frustrated, or overwhelmed at times? (20)______
39
Some people with AUTISM may notice many, many details and do not like clutter.
40
Let’s look at the paragraph at the top of page 27.
41
Which is easier to read, the beginning of the paragraph or the end of the paragraph? (21)____
42
Now imagine that you studied for a reading test last night…
43
…and your teacher gave you the test today but it was written in German.
44
How would you feel when you tried to take the test? (22)_____
45
How do you think you would do on that test? (23)_____
46
Some people with AUTISM become upset or nervous when things change or surprise them…
47
…sometimes they will try to make themselves feel better by thinking of something else or
somewhere else...
48
…other times they may stim to feel more secure
…other times they may stim to feel more secure. Stimming is repeated movements, usually with the hand(s).
49
Let’s try this. When I say “begin”, I want you to turn your paper over, pick up your pencil, and circle the numbers in order (circle 1, then 2, then 3, etc.) until I say “stop, pencils down”. WAIT 30 SECONDS.
51
How far did you get? (24)____
52
Now, we’re going to try again
Now, we’re going to try again. When I say “begin”, I want you to turn your other paper over and circle the numbers in order until I say “stop, pencils down”. WAIT 30 SECONDS
54
How far did you get this time? (25)____
55
Most of us do much better the second try because we knew what to expect. Some people with AUTISM are extremely uncomfortable with the unexpected. Following a routine schedule helps them feel more comfortable.
56
Now, let’s look at the top of page 29.
57
Think about a time when your mom or dad wasn’t able to tuck you in at night…
58
…or when the fire alarm first goes off, or even when it is announced at the end of the day that there is a change in your bus number?
59
How do you feel when this happens
How do you feel when this happens? (26)______ Some people with AUTISM feel this anxiety with the slightest of change in their daily life.
60
Some people with AUTISM play games differently than you
Some people with AUTISM play games differently than you. Let’s look at the top of p.31.
61
How do you feel when your friends play a game you don’t like or aren’t good at? (27)________
62
Some people with AUTISM do not talk
Some people with AUTISM do not talk. Other times, they may just repeat what you say instead of answering you.
63
Let’s look at the top of p. 33
Let’s look at the top of p.33. Now, let’s imagine that you are really, really sick but you aren’t able to tell your mom.
64
…what would you do or how would that make you feel? (28)_____
65
Some people with AUTISM may not understand the way you use certain words.
66
They may think the words or expressions you use, mean exactly the way they sound.
67
For example “that’s cool”…
68
…“can you lend me a hand?...”
69
“… or “what’s up?”. Let’s look at the top of p.35.
70
Think about how we rely so much on facial expressions—
71
…your teacher’s glare when she’s upset with the class…
72
that “look” your mom gives you when you are not behaving at church or at the grocery store…
73
…or just a simple smile.
74
Let’s look at the top of p. 37
Let’s look at the top of p.37. How would you feel if you could not see or understand a simple smile? (29)____
75
Some people with AUTISM may not understand facial expressions, and may not react to your conversation as you may expect.
76
You may think they are not listening or not interested in what you are saying.
77
To remember…
78
and…
79
and…

83
Today, I hope you have learned that people with AUTISM
are very interesting and they are very brave to try hard to do things we take for granted…
84
…and it’s very important to remember…
85
How can you be a better friend to someone you know who has AUTISM
