Speech /19/17 Mr. Verutes Aim: What are Prepositions and Prepositional Phrases? How do we use them in sentences? Do Now: Review the “Prepositions and Phrases” handout. Mark the text as your review the handout (circle/underline/highlight). Then, answer the following review questions in 1-2 complete sentences in your own words. 1. What do we use prepositions to show in a sentence? What is a phrase defined as? As what parts of speech do prepositional phrases act?

Prepositions A preposition is a part of speech that shows a relationship between two other words. A preposition is followed by a noun or pronoun to form a prepositional phrase. The noun or pronoun may be modified by adjectives and/or adverbs between the preposition and the noun/pronoun. The noun or pronoun that completes the phrase is called the object of the preposition. Prepositions Two words: jumped + box
The mouse jumped over the box. Two words: jumped + box Relationship: over helps show the relationship between the action of jumping and the box Over is a preposition!

Classwork Identify and bold the preposition in each exercise. Then underline the prepositional phrase that the preposition starts. The pizza in the oven is mine. The girl by the door is my sister. The runners raced around the track.

Whole Class Review - Prepositional Phrases are modifiers
The student in the back was talking. The office by the main door was busy. Silence your phone in homeroom. He reported to detention after dismissal. Eg-Rule Strategy (Inductive) Prepositional phrases modify either a verb, adjective, or adverb (adverb phrases) OR a noun or pronoun (adjective phrases).

Prepositions can show any of the following relationships, and prepositional phrases act as adjectives (adjective phrases) and adverbs (adverb phrases): The ENTIRE prepositional phrase answers: Example: How (In what manner)? We walked toward the park. When? He arrived at 8:00 a.m. Where? Jacob went to the movie. Why? Ali lah made pancakes for breakfast. Under what conditions? For my students, I will make time. To what extent? We reviewed the material for an entire week. What kind? Anthony bought tickets for New York Comic Con. Which one? The exam on Tuesday was difficult.
