Morphology Hydras have tube-like body up to 10 mm with a foot at the end. At the free end of the body there is a mouth surrounded by 1-12 tentacles. 98.94% of the tentacles have stinging cells on them. Hydras have 2 main body layers which makes it diploblastic.
4
Nutrition and feeding This organism mainly feeds on the small aquatic creatures Daphnia and the Cyclops When feeding the hydra extends its tentacles out to its maximum length which is about five times there usual size. Upon contact the tentacles shoots out nematocysts at prey and paralyzes them. Then they wrap their tentacles around their prey. Within 2 minutes the tentacles have surrounded the prey and in its mouth within 10 its in the body cavity.
5
Movement Nutrition/feeding
If Hydra is attacked tentacles can retreat into small buds and body can retract into a small sphere It can only move several inches a day The hydra moves by looping which is when the body bends over and attaches to the substrate with mouth and tentacles
6
Reproduction The Hydra reproduces by producing buds in the wall that grow to be mini adults and break away when they are mature. When well fed, new buds form every day.
7
Respiration Both layers of cells are in contact with the environment and all cells exchange gas by direct diffusion (movement of the water) The hydra respires much like a fish they respire through their skin.
8
Random factoids When a hydra is born it stays attached to its parent until it’s reached full maturity then it breaks off and lives on its own. The hydra excretes by diffusion everywhere in its body
9
Sensitivity The nervous system of a hydra is a nerve net, which is structurally simple compared to a mammal. The hydra has no recognized brain or real muscles. The gut of a hydra is simply a hollow cavity within the body and has one opening in its sides
