1 Gas! Gas! And More Gas! Math 11 E

2 An important part of taking a trip (if you are driving) is knowing how much money you will need for gas.

3 You need to know several things to do this calculation:
Distance travelled Consumption rate of vehicle Cost of gas per litre

4 Once we know this we use the formula:
Cost of Driving = Total Distance x Gas Consumption Rate x Cost per Litre ÷ 100

5 Ex1. Suppose gas costs $0. 725 per litre and a car consumes 9
Ex1. Suppose gas costs $0.725 per litre and a car consumes 9.7L of gas per 100km. How much would gas cost for a 500 Km trip?

6 Ex2. Mrs. Cooper is driving home to NL from her house in Cole Harbour
Ex2. Mrs. Cooper is driving home to NL from her house in Cole Harbour. The distance one way is 892km. She drives a Mitsubishi Outlander, and the fuel consumption rating is 7.6 L per 100 Km. When she drove there for Christmas the gas cost $1.31 per litre. How far did she travel both ways? How much did she have to budget for gas for the trip?

7 You Try: Using the current cost of gas and a car that has a fuel efficiency rating of 8.1 L per 100 Km, calculate how much gas you will need to drive to Calgary to get to your new job. It is about 4769km from Dartmouth to Calgary.
