Standards of Classroom Behavior
a. Students are expected to “adhere to high standards of honor and good citizenship.” They “must conduct themselves in a responsible manner, which reflects credit upon themselves and the college.” (68) b. Faculty member has “primary responsibility for managing the classroom environment” and may direct a student who is disrupting a class to leave for the rest of that class.

c. Classroom, lab, or office disruptions: “behavior a reasonable person would view as substantially and repeatedly interfering with the conduct of class or lab, or official college business.” (67) -may include: using cell phones, leaving and returning to the room without permission, using inappropriate language, talking with classmates, etc. (See manual for list.)

*In what ways can we cultivate a positive learning environment within the classrooms so that disruptions are infrequent? *As chairs, how best can we support our colleagues and adjunct faculty as they create these environments? What kind of follow up will be important? Pair/Share

And when disruptions still happen? As leaders what do we need to do?
Act at the beginning of the term. Make sure student has the chance to change to avoid being reported (instructor initiated). In cases of Academic Dishonesty, work closely with coordinator to follow process (see in manual). Report as a Code of Conduct violation, if necessary.

Jean’s Tips for Handling Student Complaints
Listen attentively with an open heart. (What brings you here today? What would you like to leave with?) Take notes! Be fair to both the student and instructor. Encourage the student to talk with instructor outside of class. 9/10 the issue is settled immediately with this conversation.

Jean’s Tips for Handling Student Complaints
Use the time to teach academic success strategies. Make it a ‘teachable moment’. Let instructor know that you’ve met with student with his/her consent. Get contact info for follow up. Should no resolution be reached between instructor and student, student has right to complete an Academic Complaint form.
