3. Background Information about Kerfuffle
Our town has been buying electricity from a neighboring town, but due to growth we now need to build our own power plant. The town is fairly small, around 25,000 citizens. There are two outlying communities of around 2,500 each. There are grocery stores, two libraries a couple of small museums, and 3 high schools. There are several small manufacturing companies that provide jobs as well as using a substantial amount of energy. A nearby forest is being selectively logged. Certain portions of the forest are private land and they are being clear cut and replanted. This town is at the 45th latitude. There is a large river that runs through the town just upstream from the town is a large ravine that would be suitable for a hydroelectric dam. The same ravine currently has a regular 30 mph wind that blows through it. . The mountains that form the ravine also have regular 20 mph winds that blow over them. Neither is constant but they are regular. There are Coal reserves located under the edge of the mountains and into the valley. Local farmers are successfully growing corn, wheat, barley, potatoes, beets, and raising cattle, pigs and sheep. The weather is generally, good, and there are around 200 days of sunny weather. They are mostly concentrated in the summer, but there are sunny days year round. During the winter months there are some severe snow storms, but they are less common than regular snowfall of 2” to 3”. University geologists have identified a hot springs area that is feed by underground lava.
