3. Energy Resources
As we know, the law of conservation of energy states that energy cannot be created nor destroyed, only transformed or converted to another form
Most of the energy on Earth comes from the SUN…a small amount of energy comes from radioactive atoms in Earth’s interior

4. Fossil Fuels Fossil fuels are: Coal, Natural gas, and Oil
Radiant Energy

Chemical Energy

Thermal Energy
Fossil fuels are: Coal, Natural gas, and Oil
Fossil fuels were made by extreme heat and pressure on the remains of once living things after millions of years
Natural gas and oil were made from the remains of ocean dwelling organisms
Coal was made from the remains of plants that lived on land

5. Using fossil fuels
Fossils fuels are considered a nonrenewable resource because they are used up much faster than they can be replaced.
One disadvantage of fossil fuels is that they cause air pollution

6. Nuclear Energy
Energy released from a split atom (fission) is used to heat up water. (THERMAL)
The steam is then used to power a generator (MECHANICAL)
This generator created electrical energy (ELECTRICAL)

7. Nuclear Energy Disadvantages:
Waste is radioactive and dangerous to environment
Amount of uranium in Earth’s crust is nonrenewable

8. Hydroelectricity
Transferring the potential energy in water trapped behind dams and turning it into electrical energy
Largest source of renewable energy; an energy source that is replenished regularly
Produce NO pollution
Disrupts life cycles of aquatic animals

9. Alternative Sources of Energy
Alternative resources are new sources of energy that are safer and cause less harm to the environment
Examples include
Solar energy- collecting energy from the sun (photovoltaic collectors & solar panels)
Wind energy- collecting energy from the wind (wind mills)
Geothermal energy- collecting energy from the heat inside Earth’s layers (geothermal reservoirs, heat pumps, power plants)
Inexhaustible resources are sources of energy that cannot be used up by humans

Inexhaustible resource that turns mechanical energy to electrical energy using the tides– tidal energy
