Q & A Page When will homework begin? Official homework will begin on September 6th. In the meantime, please have your child practice the following: writing his/her first and last name recognizing and writing alphabet letters recognizing and writing numbers 0-20 sight words and reading together What if I have additional questions (that were not already addressed in this handbook)? Art This flip book has been created to acquaint you with the major components of our program which will help your child be successful. Please keep this as a reference guide for the entire year. We want to welcome you and your child to our Kindergarten program at Greendale Elementary School. We are looking forward to an exciting year of new experiences and lots of fun! It is during the first years of life that children form attitudes about themselves, others, learning, and the environment. These attitudes last a lifetime, so we work very hard to find ways to help children develop positive attitudes. Introduction

Expectations School Times 7:00am Students Arrive & Enter the Building
Agendas: Your child will be bringing home an agenda Monday-Thursday (we do not send agendas home on Fridays unless there is an issue). These have been ordered and should arrive soon. Each day we will stamp the color that your child received for the day. Each day every student will begin on green. All students are given three chances to correct inappropriate behavior before resulting in a color change. Therefore, if you notice green crossed out and the stamp on another color, please discuss appropriate behavior with your child. If your child is having a problem or needs to work on something, we may write a note in the agenda. Please sign it each day and return to school in your child’s book bag. Thank you for your cooperation as we feel this will be an effective way for parents and teachers to communicate daily. Behavior Expectations: Behavior is a very important part of the classroom. In Kindergarten, students learn self-control and how to interact with others. Please encourage your child to follow the rules and talk with him/her about appropriate behavior if he/she makes mistakes. We follow the conduct codes outlined in the agendas. School Phone Number (leave a message with the office staff if from the hours of 7:00am-2:45pm) ***We are busy with morning duty, teaching, and afternoon duty from the hours of 7:00am-2:45pm. However, you may call the school to schedule a meeting with us on Mondays, Tuesdays, or Thursdays after 2:45pm. Wednesdays are reserved for faculty meetings. If you try to catch us when we are on duty or with the students, we will not be able to discuss your child or give you our full attention at that time, so please call in advance to schedule a meeting if you wish to discuss your child. Label, Label, Label: Please label your child’s coats, sweaters, backpacks, lunchboxes, etc… Please label everything and anything sent to class. It is highly advised to send in an extra pair of clothes in a bag labeled with your child’s name in case of an accident. Shoes: For safety reasons, we ask that all children wear tennis shoes to school. Sandals, “high heeled” shoes, and flip flops are not allowed. Illness: When your child is ill, please call the office and report your child’s absence. Upon return to school, please write a note regarding the reason for his/her absence or send in a doctor’s note. All absences must be verified. If your child becomes ill at school, he/she will be sent to the office and you or one of the names listed on the emergency card will be contacted. Please notify the office immediately if any contact numbers change. Transportation: If it becomes necessary to make a change in the normal routine, parents must write a note in order to inform us of the change in transportation. Please make all arrangements before a child leaves for school in the morning. Money: All money sent to school should be in an envelope with the child’s name, the teacher’s name, and how the money is to be distributed (ex. lunch money, picture day money, etc.). Educating a child is most successful when families and schools work together in the best interest of the child. We welcome your input and assistance in educating your child; after all, you are your child’s first teacher! Valuing education and the opportunities it provides are important first steps. Going to school is one of the most important experiences in a child’s life. School can be an exciting place where children meet new and different people and participate in many new and different experiences. We promise to work diligently to provide the students with wonderful experiences that help them feel good about themselves and their school. *We also have an observation area designated for students to sit and reflect upon their behavior while observing other students exhibiting appropriate behaviors so that he/she may get back on track.* Thursday Folders: Class work and other papers completed by your child throughout the week will go home each Thursday in the Greendale folder along with other important notices. Please look for this folder each week. Report Cards: Students will receive report cards at the end of each nine weeks indicating whether or not they have mastered the standards the class has been taught. Homework: One effective way for a child to learn responsibility is by doing homework neatly, correctly, and on time. Homework is designed as reinforcement of skills learned earlier and practiced in class. Homework will be given on Monday through Thursday and should involve the parents. Homework should be done with a pencil and is due the next day unless otherwise noted. It will be located inside your child’s homework folder. A corresponding homework calendar will be sent home so you know exactly what is expected daily. Books-in-a-Bag: Eventually your child will begin bringing home a colorful bag with books inside. These are “just right” books your child should be able to read to an adult with little help, if any at all. Your child should read the books nightly to help build fluency and practice high frequency words found in the text. The books should not be written or drawn in and they are not to be kept. Home Activities Practice writing his/her first and last name:
Have your child practice writing his/her name using a variety of tools such as a Magna Doodle, crayons, pencils, and markers. Be sure that your child uses a capital letter only at the beginning and lowercase letters for the rest of the name. Cut apart the letters of your child’s name (or use magnetic letters) and have him/her put them back in the correct order saying the name of each letter while doing so. (Start with just the first name, adding the last name only when they have mastered this.) Practice recognizing and writing numbers 0 to 20 (or higher): Use magnetic numbers to have your child practice naming them. Practice writing numbers using a variety of materials such as pencils, crayons, markers, and sidewalk chalk, etc. Practice counting orally (0-100) and practice counting objects (to 20 or higher): Have your child count his/her own snacks such as pretzels, goldfish crackers, grapes, etc. Practice naming and correctly writing the letters in the alphabet: Help your child recognize letters of the alphabet in everyday life (ex. restaurants, road signs, store signs, cereal boxes, etc.). Practice recognizing and writing both upper- and lowercase letters. Practice book handling skills: Discuss how to open the book from the front. Point out the front of the book and the back of the book. Discuss that the front of the book is where the story begins and the back is where the story ends. Discuss how to hold a book so it is not upside down and show him/her where to start reading (from left to right & top to bottom). Read with your child on a daily basis. Home Activities
