1 Mr. Baresse Northeast Intermediate School: 2015-16
Origins of Democracy Mr. Baresse Northeast Intermediate School:

2 Course Overview Students should understand the development of the origins of American democracy from past governments, including Greece, Rome, and English government systems. This will encompass basic roots and foundations of Greece and Rome, City-States, advancements in English Democracy ,

3 Course Overview (continued)
colonialization governments, colonial life, Revolutionary period, Constitution and Amendments including all phases and functions of government, including local, state and federal, supported with specific ideas of citizenship.

4 Organization This is a history class, therefore, there are a lot of facts and ideas that need to be written and discussed. I will provide power points most of the time to provide the necessary material for the quizzes and tests. During these power points, students will be expected to remain silent and copy the notes into their notebook, while I lecture and discuss them.

5 Organization I will answer any question if a student raises their hand and it is relevant to the topic. I will do my best to provide visuals such as maps, pictures, video clips, cartoons, etc. in order to enrich the lesson and make it more appealing. Worksheets, quizzes, and tests will be made from these notes. There will also be group work and extra credit projects.

6 Organization I will also do my best to provide primary sources such as document or speeches (Ex: The Declaration of Independence) when discussing the lesson, so that the students gain a better understanding for that historical period. I will also incorporate relevant cinema to the lessons when necessary. Certain movies give great examples for the time period being discussed (Ex: The Patriot).

7 Texts and Required Supplies:
1.) Texts will stay in class. They will be available to sign out. 2.) Notebooks 3.) At the Bell Notebooks (*All notebooks should be kept in pristine condition) 4.) Writing Utensils

8 Grading Everything you do in class and for homework will be put in the same pile of points that will determine your quarter grade. We will have roughly 3 tests, 3 quizzes, quarterly notebook checks, worksheets, classroom (daily grades) points, homework points, behavior points, project points (during certain quarters), extra credit points etc.

9 Grading **I RESERVE THE RIGHT TO DEDUCT POINTS AT MY DISCRETION IF YOU ARE DISRUPTIVE IN CLASS OR SHOW ANY SIGNS OF DISRESPECT** *I HAVE THE FINAL SAY IN THE GRADE THAT YOU RECEIVE AND THE RIGHT TO GIVE YOU THE GRADE THAT YOU DESERVE** **THERE WILL ALSO BE SURPRISE NOTEBOOK QUIZZES WEEKLY, TO MAKE SURE THAT EVERYONE IS TAKING NOTES ON A DAILY BASIS. (I don’t usually do this unless a class becomes a problem – I have done it before!!) **EXTRA CREDIT WILL BE AVAILABLE** **CLASS PARTICIPATION WILL ALWAYS HELP YOUR GRADE**

10 Classroom rules TWO MAJOR RULES: 1.) RESPECT ME
2.) RESPECT YOUR CLASSMATES -if these two rules are followed, then there should not be a problem, but for those of you who need the rules spelled out, here they are.

11 Rules 1.) Do not talk when I am talking. There is nothing that is more disrespectful or bothersome than that. If you interrupt me during a lesson, I will address the matter at first. If it continues, then I will simply ask you to leave the classroom. Also, do not curse.

12 Rules 2.) Stay in your seat. Be in your seat before the bell rings (there is no bell, be here on time!!), and stay there unless you are told otherwise until I dismiss you to leave. If you need to sharpen your pencil or throw something away that is fine, but try to keep it to a minimum. You need to start you daily ATB question as soon as you arrive!!!

13 Rules If you need to leave the classroom to use the lavatory or get a drink, raise your hand and ask. If it is an ABSOLUTE EMERGENCY, simply leave and explain it to me later. There should be no reason for people to be wandering around the classroom or looking out the window. ONE PERSON OUT OF THE ROOM AT A TIME! Always sign out and sign in!!!

14 Rules 3.) Keep your garbage in the garbage. Under no circumstances should I find garbage anywhere in the classroom. Clean up after yourself. You should leave the classroom exactly how you found it. If you see garbage, lend a hand and throw it away.

15 Rules **UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCE SHOULD I SEE ANYTHING FLYING THROUGH THE AIR*. Do not throw paper, pencils, people, or any other object. Do not use the garbage can or the recycling bin as basketball practice, you are not Lebron James, walk your garbage up to the bin.

16 Rules 4.) Do Not Bully in my classroom. This means physically or verbally. My classroom will be an environment where everyone is equal and can feel safe. Do not ever lay your hands on another student in my classroom whether it is fooling around or not. Go out for football or wrestling if you want to take out aggression.

17 Rules 5.) School Rules are my Rules. The rules of the school follow in my classroom also. For example, you are to be in dress code. Cell Phones, IPods, and other electronics are not allowed. Do not use your cell phone or other electronic devices during class. NO GUM, NO FOOD, NO DRINKS

18

19 Rules If you need to make an emergency call, please inform me and I may let you go out into the hall. NEVER LET ME SEE YOU USE ELECTRONICS DURING A TEST!

20 Rules 6.) Come to class prepared. Failure to do so could affect your daily grade. (Bring your book, a notebook, and a writing utensil). Be on time for class.

21 Rules 7.) I reserve the right to determine your final grade and any punishment that I find appropriate. It is my classroom and I make all of the final decisions regardless of grades.

22 Rules 8.) NO TOUCH POLICY Whether it is meant in a kind or mean manner, absolutely no touching, I cannot stress this enough.
