1 What is the missing

2 Quick Quiz recap Give 3 ways in which diseases are transmitted
Give 2 methods of community responsibility for preventing the transmission of micro-organisms. Give a personal method of preventing/decreasing transmission What is the difference between endemic and epidemic? What are the 3 control measures for limiting spread patterns of emerging diseases?

3 Quick Quiz recap Give 3 ways in which diseases are transmitted
direct physical contact (hands shaking) Water (contaminated by micro-organism) Food (contaminated – common faecal-oral route) body fluids (saliva/blood or seminal fluids (or needle share) inhaled air (droplets in air, sneezing/coughing) vector organisms (mosquitoes / fleas) - indirect physical contact (cup/ door handle/ needle)

4 Quick Quiz recap 2. Give 2 methods of community responsibility for preventing the transmission of micro-organisms. - water quality - safety food webs / preparation - appropriate waste regulations / disposal mechanisms - quarantine - antisepsis - controlling vectors - boarder control of plants/soils etc.

5 Quick Quiz recap 3. Give a personal method of preventing/decreasing transmission Personal hygiene (washing hands/showering/ teeth cleaning) Sexual health care (promiscuity / condoms) Appropriate handling and storage of food 4. What is the difference between endemic and epidemic? - Endemic in one area/ specific people affected only – epidemic in one area with high number of cases which affecting more people – widerspread.

6 Quick Quiz recap 5. What are the 3 control measures for limiting spread patterns of emerging diseases? preventing transmission (TODAY) drug therapy (NEXT SLIDE) Immunisation

7 Big picture Immune system diseases Non specific immunity
Disease survival mechanisms Physical & chemical barriers We are here Infectious Disease Inflammatory Transmission Epidemiology Non-specific Cellular response Specific immunity Vaccination Public Health Immunological surveillance B cells T cells Clonal Selection theory Big picture

8 Learning outcomes Identify the different types of infectious diseases
Present your findings in a concise manner

9 Main culprits of disease ......
Multicellular parasites Into a triplicate and i’ll give you a microbe

10 Roles The success of the group should depend on co-operation between all members of the group. Checker – must make sure all work is biologically correct, makes sense and is fully referenced. Chief researcher – finds suitable sources of information from textbooks, websites, etc. Presentation manager – compiles information in a PowerPoint presentation. Success manager – must make sure the work of the group meets the success criteria for the task. Groups of 3 – success manager also checker.

11 Success criteria We will know we are successful when we can research and provide information on a given pathogen, including: a description of the pathogen examples of diseases caused by the pathogen methods of transmission how to prevent and control transmission including individual and community responsibility and the control of vectors). DO NOT USE CHOLERA / MEASLES / HIV!

12 Multicellular parasites
The presentation must meet the following criteria: be written in your own words – no copy and paste jobs be no more than 50 words per slide use of pictures/diagrams as appropriate. Tetanus athletes foot hpv malaria hookworm Multicellular parasites

13 Complete your presentation for next lesson .....

14 Use p329 to complete the first three rows – now check that you can add something to each column!
Starter Pathogen Description Examples of diseases Methods of transmission Individual responsibility Community responsibility Control of vectors Measles HIV Cholera

15 Now listen to each other and fill in the other boxes

16 review Did you meet the success criteria?
How well did your group work – percentage contributes/ stick to your roles? Next time I will ....

17 Summary slide Infectious diseases are caused by pathogens such as viruses, bacteria, fungi, protozoa and multicellular parasites. eg. comparison of the transmission methods of different pathogens, eg measles (air borne), HIV (body fluids) and cholera (water or food).
