The history of Severomorsk is original and unique
The history of Severomorsk is original and unique. Its foundation and development is closely related to the development of the Northern Fleeth. Severomorsk appeared instead of the former settlement called Vayenga in The native people of the Kolar Peninsular were the Saami people. They were the first to come here and a find a small mountain river full of fish. The river derives its name from the Saami’s word “vadge”-which means reindeer female.

At the beginning of the 20 century not only the Saami,the Pomors, but the Russians and the Finns lived in our region. After the October events of 1917 the most Finns left. According to the information of the Museum of Regional Studies only 13 people lived in Vayenga that time and only in the 20th an active development of the area began. In people lived in the settlement. In some specialists came to make a road,connecting Vayenga with Murmansk. The building of the road was finished in

A new historical level of Vayenga began after the foundation of the Northern Fleeth. In the building of the Naval base in Vayenga started. In 1937 our fleet was renamed into the Northern Fleet. Air forces contributed to the naval forces.

In pre-war time Vayenga turned into a building area
In pre-war time Vayenga turned into a building area. Builders lived in tent towns, having a great strategic value both for the Soviet Polar region and for the whole country. During the war time Vayenga was mostly a military garrison than a settlement.

During the Great Patriotic War people of Severomork showed their courage and strong character defending Soviet Polar region.

After the war time the Northern Fleet was improving its power in peaceful time while the inhabitants of the settlement started their peaceful labour.Block s of flats,schools,hospitals and a library were built.

On the 18 of April 1951 the settlement Vayenga was renamed into Severomorsk.

The Nagornaya street, exhisting on a low hill, consisted of plain small Finnish houses.
The houses were standing in lines, there were wooden roads between them.

In 1935 the building of the base of the Northern Fleeth began.The wooden berth in the region of the present sea terminal was built. The features of the sea town are seen in the decorations of the houses with the naval symbols and in the names of the streets:Korabelnaya, Morskaya. The street with two storeyed houses in the region betweeen the Mayachnaya hill and the Sivko street got its name – the Korabelnaya street in in the end of the 80th the street changed: modern blocks of flats appeared instead of small wooden houses.

The Primorskaya square became the sea gates of the town
The Primorskaya square became the sea gates of the town. The symbol of the town is a monument to the Severomorsk seamen, the defenders of the Polar region during the Great Patriotic. It’s height is about 27 metres. Its foundation was in June in to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the Northern Fleeth.

In Vayenga grew with the development of the Northern Fleeth. In 1939 two first stone buildings appeared which gave the beginning of the Safonov street in 1945.After the war the building of the street had been accomplished by the 60th. In 1954 the House of Officers was built.

The next main event in the cultural life of the town was an appearance of the first cinema “Russia” in 1956. In 1966 the first nine storeyed house(№16) was built in Dushenov street.

On the 31st of July in 1951 the central town park was opened, it’s the most favourite place for city dwellers to have a rest. The former Finnish houses were replaced by the nine storeyed buildings in Sivko and Morskaya streets. In 1995-the Children’s school was opened.

The House of Pioneers appeared in 1956.
In the 70th the houses of the Fleeth and Children’s libraries were found. A very well equipped stadium was built in 1948.

Kirov street was built in a two years time in 1955.
In 1972 the first underground road between Kirov and Dushenov streets was founded.

In 1965 the nine storeyed building with a furniture shop was constructed in the Dushenov street.

Conclusion Vaenga was situated on the polar Peninsular beyong the Polar circle. The native dwellers of Vaenga were the Saami. The development of the settlement Vaenga began in with the appearance of the Northern Fleeth. On the 18th of April 1951 Vaenga was renamed into Severomorsk. Nowadays Severomorsk is a capital of the Northern Fleeth, a wonderful town with a developed industry and a such cultural life. Our people living in a severe Polar climate, are brave, courageous, very friendly and warm – hearted.
