Year One Still Having Fun!!
The children have all made a pleasing start to their time in Year 1 and are settling well into their new classrooms, using routines they are familiar with whilst gradually moving them on and preparing them for Year 1. The children are continuing to access the new curriculum in a lively, fun and play based way. This will support them in their transition from Reception to Year 1. They will continue to work and play in a variety of ways - small groups, with partners or sometimes as a whole class.

Singapore Maths Maths is taught following the Singapore Maths approach, using textbooks and workbooks. A whole class input and practical session is followed by journalling and then workbook pages. The children sit in mixed ability groups, learning and supporting each other.
7
Guided Group Work During the week all children will receive guided sessions across the curriculum. This is where the teacher or co-educator sits with the group and guides their learning at a higher level with a very specific focus.
8
Independent Learning I can do it !
Learning through play is still an important part of the Year 1 curriculum and is directly linked to the KEY OBJECTIVES which you have been given in the handout. Children are still accessing their own learning through continuous provision bases. More adult led and independent work is gradually introduced throughout the year. Independent learning follows an input from the teacher and enables the children to practise skills and concepts introduced.
9
Lets have a go!
10
Designing and Making The children are encouraged to select their own materials and organise themselves. They solve problems, find solutions and share ideas as they create and learn together.
11
“Tell me all about your model?”
Construction Design and make activities can be a great way to encourage Speaking and Listening skills and Independent Writing “Tell me all about your model?” “Could you write down how you made this?”

Housekeeping Reading Please send the reading bag and books every day. Your child will quickly get used to the days when they read. When you read with your child, please talk about the stories and ask Who? What? When? Where? Why? Please practise “tricky” words which we will send home shortly on a bookmark in your child’s book. Please sign your child’s reading record book each time you hear them read.
15
Phonics Phonics Daily phonics lessons follow the Year 1 Phonics Letters and Sounds programme. Your child’s reading book matches the phonics they have been taught.
16
Guided Reading Children are taken out in small groups for a reading session twice a week, once with the teacher and once with the co - educator. This is when children are taught reading skills and their comprehension is developed through questioning.
17
We encourage the children to read for pleasure.
Independent Reading We encourage the children to read for pleasure. In their development for a love of language and reading books, all children will have many opportunities during each day to access a wide range of books.
18
Outdoor learning Our own outdoor space provides the children with many learning opportunities. Small group adult directed activities are planned and linked to curriculum.
19
Outdoor fun! The outdoor environment is used as much as possible to stimulate the children’s learning.
20
Independence Throughout Reception the children have become increasingly independent, looking after own coats, bags etc. In Year 1 we encourage this independence, as the children will only become really efficient in their learning if they are able to work and think for themselves. Please encourage them to do as much for themselves as possible.
21
Milk and Fruit Snack The children are invited to have milk and fruit every day. We all sit together at the same time, not like in Reception.
22
Homework Reading – please read for 10 minutes with your child every night A homework pack will be sent home shortly. Written homework will be sent home once a week to support learning done in class. Spellings will be sent once a week
