3 By Definition: Sustainability is based on a simple principle:
Everything that we need for our survival and well-being depends, either directly or indirectly, on our natural environment. Sustainability creates and maintains the conditions under which humans and nature can exist in productive harmony, that permit fulfilling the social, economic and other requirements of present and future generations. Sustainability is important to making sure that we have and will continue to have, the water, materials, and resources to protect human health and our environment. (Source, EPA 2014)

12 In Tourism…. What does it mean?

13

14 VS….

15 The comparison: People/Profit
International Imports– take money away from local people (fishermen etc) Why would hotels import rather than buy local? Local food keep locals employed and able to create a decent QOL for themselves and families They are able to practice what they know best and use their knowledge to help the tourist and in the hotel give the authentic experience! Buying local keeps the native economy stable!

16 The Planet Keeping it local means that people (the natives) have more say in how their land will be used and what aspects are conserved or developed Tourists and tourism brings a lot of waste management issues, learning from the traditional ways of natives may help Natives have a say in what NATURAL sites are to conserved etc.
