3. What is SBAC? SBAC stands for Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium
An on-line assessment system aligned to the common core state standards
SBAC replaced the old STAR test that we used to take
No more paper pencil tests

4. What Will The Test Look Like?
2 Tests in English Literacy and Math
Computer Adaptive Test
Multiple-choice
Constructed Response
Performance Task
Read multiple articles, short answer responses, full essay
Students WILL need headphones for the ELA Tests
EVERYONE TAKES BOTH PORTIONS OF THE TEST…EVEN IF YOU ARE NOT CURRENTLY ENROLLED IN A MATH CLASS.
Computer adaptive—mostly multiple choice; some constructed response; adjusts to a student’s ability by basing the difficulty of future questions
Performance Task—2 parts-1st part is done in your classroom (very important that you do NOT miss this part); 2nd part done on the computer (goes with the classroom activity)

5. Why Is This Test Important?
SBAC is an assessment to show growth in 11th grade and to aide in placement for 12th grade classes
High enough test scores could possibly allow students to have more choices in their senior English class
A portion of the SBAC test also counts for their EAP score

6. What is the EAP?
EAP (Early Assessment Program) is embedded into the SBAC test
11th grade SBAC covers High school standards and CSU placement standards
If students score high enough on the SBAC, they may be exempt from 1-2 introductory courses for English and/or math
Students can also bypass taking the placement test for English and/or math
EAP (Early Assessment Program) is not a separate test; It is embedded into the Smarter Balanced test.
The test covers high school standards and CSU placement standards.
If you do not score ‘Ready’ or a 4 on the SBAC, you will need to take ERWC for English in 12th grade and get C’s or better in both semesters to avoid remedial classes at the CSU level
Over 200 colleges utilize these scores for placement

7. EAP Scores
Colleges use the student’s scores to know if they are “College Ready”
EAP results count by releasing them to the California State University. Simply mark the release button at the end of the test. It’s that easy! If students do not mark the release button, they will be required to submit their results at a later date.
YOU MUST MARK THE RELEASE BUTTON AT THE END OF THE TEST, SO THAT COLLEGES CAN RECEIVE YOUR SCORES

8. Other Benefits
Aligning school and CSU standards so that success in school means readiness for the CSU
Giving high school students an early signal about their college readiness and adequate time to prepare before entering CSU
Making the senior year a time for more direct and specific preparation for college

9. SBAC SCORES Score a 4, “Standard Exceeded” = College Ready
Student may enroll directly in CSU college level English and/or Math courses.
Exempt from taking required CSU English and or Math placement tests and from participating in the CSU Early Start Program

10. SBAC SCORES Scoring a 3, “Standard Met” = Conditionally Ready
Student must take an approved senior year long English and/or Math course and pass with a grade of “C” or better in both semesters.
Exempt from taking required CSU EPT/ELM and may be exempt from participating in the CSU Early Start Program.

Score a 2, “Standard Nearly Met = Not Yet Ready OR Score a 1, “Standard Not Met = Not Ready
You must take the required CSU EPT/ELM
May be required to participate in the CSU Early Start Program
