1 SCIENTIFIC NOTATION

2 RULES First look at the number that is to the right of the E or the exponent. This is the number of times you will move the decimal place. If it is a positive (+) number move move the decimal place to the right, if it is a negative (−) number move it to the left. If there is an open place fill it in with zeros.

3 EXAMPLE ONE E7 MOVE THE DECIMAL PLACE TO THE RIGHT 7 PLACES

4 EXAMPLE ONE .

5 EXAMPLE 2 7.426 E-3

6 EXAMPLE 2 NEGATIVE NUMBER
(We are moving it to the left because its a negative number)

7 ADDING AND SUBTRACTING
You must simplify before adding and subtracting

8 EXAMPLE 3 ( E -3)-(2.654 E -5)

9 EXAMPLE 3 CONVERTING YOUR ANSWER TO SCIENTIFIC FORM E? SINCE WE MOVED IT TO THE RIGHT IT IS A NEGATIVE NUMBER ANSWER ON SLIDE 14

10 MULTIPLYING/DIVIDING
YOU CAN JUST MULTIPLY

11 EXAMPLE 4 (7.96 E3)×(3.25 E4)

12 * When you multiply exponents, you add
EXAMPLE 4 (7.96 E3)×(3.25 E4) MULTIPLY THE BASES (THE RED) THEN THE EXPONENT (THE BLUE) 7.96 × 3.25 25.87 3 + 4 7 SO IT IS E7 * When you multiply exponents, you add BUT IT ISN'T SIMPLIFIED

13 25.87 E7 25.87 E7 EXAMPLE FOUR ANSWER ON THE NEXT SLIDE
YOU HAVE TO MOVE THE DECIMAL ONE TO THE RIGHT SO IT IS IN SCIENTIFIC FORM 25.87 E7 ANSWER ON THE NEXT SLIDE

14 ANSWERS E -3 E 8
