1 Introduction to Chemistry
Ms. Moore

2 Chemistry Is Central to All the Sciences
What is Chemistry? - A physical science Chemistry is the study of matter and its processes. Chemical is any substance that has a definite composition. – Chemistry is the study of the composition, structure, and properties of matter, and the processes that matter undergoes, and the energy changes that accompany these processes - Deals with the questions such as: What is a material’s makeup? How does a material change when heated, cooled or mixed with other materieals and why does this behavior occur.

3 Branches of Chemistry Branches of Chemistry
Organic Chemistry- the study of most carbon-containing compounds Inorganic Chemistry- the study of non-organic substances, many of which have organic fragments bonded to metals. Physical Chemistry- the study of the properties and changes of matter and their relation to energy. Analytical Chemistry- the identification of the components and composition of materials. Biochemistry- the study of substances and processes occurring in living things Theoretical chemistry- the use of mathematics and computers to understand the principles behind observed chemical behavior and to design and predict the properties of new compounds. In all areas of chemistry scientists work with chemicals. In these different branches they all have the same foundational background and core but investigate further into different processes.

4 The 5 Traditional Branches of Chemistry
Inorganic Organic Analytical Physical Biochemistry

5 Inorganic Chemistry The study of chemicals that do not contain carbon.

6 Organic Chemistry The study of chemicals that contain carbon.
Origin: study of chemicals in living organisms.

7 Organic or Inorganic ? Sulfuric Acid H2SO4 Methane CH4 Hydrochloric Acid HCl Ethane C2H6

8 Composition of matter; measurable, identifies compounds/components
Analytical Chemistry Example: Mass Spectrometer Gas Chromatograph

9 Physical Chemistry The study of : The mechanism The rate
The energy transfer that happens when matter undergoes change. Study of the interaction between two elements Study of properties and changes of matter and energy

10 Biochemistry Study of processes that take place in organisms.
Understand the structure of matter found in the human body and the chemical changes that occur in cells
