The operation of a transformer
Primary Coil - Alternating current is input at a given voltage Iron Core - Electromagnetic induction occurs producing alternating current in the secondary coil Secondary Coil - Alternating current is output at a different voltage

Example 120 volts is input to the primary coil of the transformer shown. What is the output voltage? How many loops are in the primary coil? 4 How many loops are in the secondary coil? 2

What is the input voltage?
Solution What is the input voltage? 120 volts The relationship between voltage and turns is : So : (120) (2) = Vout (4) What is Vout ? 60 volts !!!!

The previous example was called a step-down transformer
WHY??? Because the voltage decreased What is a step-up transformer? A transformer that causes the voltage to increase
