Half-Timbering Several structures from the 18th century in Salem are half-timbered. Half-timbered is when a building is constructed with both wooden timbers and bricks. Click Here to Continue

Herringbone Doors Herringbone Doors are created by making designs on the doors using wooden slats. Click Here to Continue

Ashlar Finish An Ashlar Finish is a type of exterior finish that creates a simulated cut stone effect when looking at it. Click Here to Continue

Decorative Brickwork Throughout Salem, there is decorative brickwork created by either changing the way the bricks were placed or by differing brick colors. Click Here to Continue

Flemish Bond Brickwork
Flemish Bond Brickwork is where the bricks are placed in a pattern where the Header (short side of a brick) is placed next to a Stretcher (the long side of the brick). Click Here to Continue

Entrance Hoods Entrance doors to homes and buildings throughout Salem often have an arched covering over them called entrance hoods. Click Here to Continue

Roofs There are several types of roofs found in Salem, including wood shingle and clay tile. The wood shingles would have likely been made by apprentices and laborers who worked under the town carpenter. Clay tiles were made locally by Salem’s potters. Click Here to Continue
