Think of the possible hazards in an engineering workshop.

• operating machinery • contact with hazardous substances • noisy machinery

Starter stimulus #2 List 10 hazards within the engineering workshop. Consider for each hazard: • the possible effects of the hazard to you • the training required for the people in the workshop • any psychological factors for the workers

• Compare your identified hazards and your considerations with those of other groups

Key terms #1 Hazard: Something with the potential to cause harm to you or to someone else. Risk: The likelihood that harm will occur and the severity of the harm from contact with the hazard.

Roles and responsibilities
Everybody within any engineering business has health and safety responsibilities, outlined in: • the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 • the employer’s health and safety policy • the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations • the Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations • Personal Protective Equipment at Work Regulations

Key terms #2 Employer: People that run, control and manage a workplace. Employee: People who are employed, through a contract of employment, to carry out specific jobs for an employer.
